I am a former Publicity Director whose worked for several high-end, illustrated/art publishers. I am now in-between jobs (in the process of moving) and I've been offered a couple freelance projects: a small publisher wants me to work on their spring list of books and another wants me to consult on their PR strategy.

This is my first foray into the freelance world. What is a typical fee? Do I charge an hourly fee or a flat fee?

Thanks for your help.

Typically it would be a flat fee that will depend entirely on whether you're handling basic publicity, a book tour and who's paying expenses (telephone, mail-out copies, overnight expenses, etc.) but the average (very, very ballpark) is around $2K per title and that wouldn't include expenses which you'd bill back to the client.

Thanks for the information. Have you ever charged an hourly rate? The emphasis of the book publicity will be print with limited broadcast. So 2K - flat?

Yes and $2K is fairly low; this would be an appropriate fee for a fairly limited PR push, domestic only.
