Topic: Moving up the ladder in 6 months?

| red1 | Posted 11/27/2007 10:36:51 PM | show profile I've been working for a great book publishing company for the last 6 months. (The company's great, but my boss is kinda psycho.) Anyway, my current position is mainly administrative, but my background and interest is editorial. A new position opened in the editorial department that is perfect. I spoke to HR, who told me it's not advisable to seek other opportunities until I have been with the company at least a year, but if I was serious about the position I could apply. The last thing I was told was that my time in my current position would be taken into consideration. Should I apply anyway? And should I tell my boss I'm applying? Or is applying for a job within the same company after only 6 months really a sin? |
| AWC | Posted 11/28/2007 4:40:01 PM | show profile I've worked for large organizations that have had similar policies about internal job movement, so what your HR people are saying is not uncommon. That said, if you feel strongly about this open position, I advise you to go ahead and apply for it. I would only tell the people who need to know. At the company I currently work for, people are allowed to apply to internal jobs confidentially through HR -- your current boss is only notified after there is a firm job offer. If you have to tell your current boss, just try to be as honest as possible about it. Most importantly, try to "position" your decision to apply for this job in a positive light -- your experience working for this publishing company has been very good, and you definitely see a future for yourself with this organization. It also couldn't hurt to somehow let them know that there will be no hard feelings if you don't get the job, and that you just hope to be considered for advancement in the future. Good luck. |
| writesonwater | Posted 12/5/2007 5:33:28 AM | show profile That looks like good advice to me, AWC. The one thing I'd say is if I was advised by HR to wait a year, if I had an in with a supervisor I trusted where I could make an inquiry, I might do that just to feel things out. If your boss is psycho, don't go THERE> One thing that might affect my decision is if positions come up every six months or so -- as opposed to this being a rare opportunity. |
