| nycreports | Posted 11/28/2007 7:35:51 PM | show profile Might sound trivial, but give a gal some feedback. I have an event to cover tomorrow night that is black tie. Obviously I'm a reporter not one of the celeb guests but I'll still be sitting at a table and mingling with other attendees. What should I wear? When I cover daytime events, it's easier - whatever I have on for work or a suit for trade shows. Nighttime galas are a little trickier. Dress? Pants with fancy top? How do I say serious reporter without looking like an idiot. THanks! |
| westsidestory | Posted 11/28/2007 10:49:48 PM | show profile If the event is black tie, at the very least black pants with a festive top, lots of jewelry. A long skirt would be better, but I'll assume you don't have a lot of time to shop. If you are going to be doing this a lot, invest in a gal's tuxedo and a long black skirt. Cocktail length dress: nononono Wear comfy shoes - heels will impede your pursuit of interviewees. the general rule: do not outdress anyone you are likely to be interviewing. This holds true whether you are questioning a Section 8 mom or a duchess. Extra credit tip: when looking for interview potential people in a crowd, check out all four corners of the room - power expands to the edges. Have fun! |

| wineaux | Posted 11/29/2007 2:31:00 PM | show profile I'm with what Westside said. I'd go for a simple black dress that is below the knee and some pretty jewlry w/ comfy heels or some black slacks and a simple top. I did pr for a fancy gala type event last month, and a reporter covering the event dressed perfectly, IMO: black slacks, her long hair back in a low pontytail with a scarf, a big, beautiful modern necklace and a simple and stylish black silk fitted sweater. She looked very sleek and professional, and it was obvious she was there not as a guest. |
