| bookmap | Posted 11/28/2007 10:18:17 PM | show profile I'm doing research for relocation purposes, and I've heard Hoboken is a good place to live when you're working in NYC. But if one was to work in the city of Hoboken, where would be the best places to live? Public transportation would be a must, but perhaps there are some cheaper areas? I also wouldn't mind living right in Hoboken, if I know which areas are the best. I'm young, single and love to go out. Any insight is much appreciated! |
| Village Gal | Posted 11/29/2007 12:45:30 PM | show profile Hoboken, aka the sixth borough, is one square mile so you can get around the town without a car. It has gotten pricey during the past few years and is probably in the same range as living in Brooklyn. From what I've heard, there is a good nightlife scene in Hoboken. |
| AWC | Posted 11/29/2007 1:02:16 PM | show profile Hoboken is very small -- I think it's only about 1 square mile, so walking or very short bus rides are the norm for getting around. You can pretty much walk anywhere you need to go. The main street in Hoboken is Washington Street -- mainly small restaurants, cafes, bars, and local shops. There are decent bars all along Washington St., but most of them are located at the southern end of the town around 1st and 2nd Streets. If you like to go out, I would look for places to live closer to these areas. Also, the south end of the town is much more convenient to the PATH trains into the city than is the northern end. Like most of the NYC area, Hoboken is being overwhelmed by new "luxury condo" buildings, especially right along the water on Frank Sinatra Drive. They have great views of Manhattan, but are expensive. Your best bet is to find an apartment in an older, smaller building off of Washington Street -- there are plenty to chose from. I would only caution you against living in two areas: the streets around the Stevens Institute have quite a bit of student housing, so it can be a bit "frat-like," which isn't so great. Also, there are some small public housing projects at the western edge of the town that can be kind of sketchy. Otherwise, Hoboken is a really nice, and often overlooked, place to live in the NYC area. |
| IHateMostPeople | Posted 11/30/2007 2:21:12 PM | show profile Quick question...say you want to stay late while you're out in NYC... Is there any way the party goers can get back to Hoboken at like 3, 4, 5 am? I don't know the times the PATH runs, but I thought it didn't run after midnight? I too am looking for a place. Good luck to both of us!! |
| anewstart | Posted 11/30/2007 2:27:16 PM | show profile Path runs 24 hours. That's not to say you won't wait 40 minutes for one at 2 am, but it DOES run 24 hours. You can also take a cab if you don't mind paying $40+... |
| anewstart | Posted 11/30/2007 2:28:25 PM | show profile Oh and.. the bus also runs 24/7 from Port Authority. IMHO the bus is actually the best way to get into the city from the 'bokes (depending upon where you work, of course). |
| AWC | Posted 11/30/2007 2:51:47 PM | show profile The bus from Port Authority to Hoboken only runs to about 12:30am. There is usually a big crowd on weekends at that time trying to catch the last bus out. |
| anewstart | Posted 11/30/2007 2:54:29 PM | show profile Ah... guess they changed the 24/7 policy they had when I lived there. My bad! |
| AWC | Posted 11/30/2007 3:16:14 PM | show profile I vaguely recall an article in the NYTimes last year about the late night difficulty in getting back to NJ from the city. A lot of (mainly) young kids come into the city on weekends, and kind of get "stuck" in the city if they stay too late. It can sometimes get a little scary -- after the last bus leaves and they lock the doors at Port Authority, groups of weirdly agressive taxi/town car drivers try to rope in those left behind that need to get back across the river. |
| bookmap | Posted 11/30/2007 4:46:10 PM | show profile good thing i have friends in brooklyn and manhattan...places to crash for those insane late nights out...thanks for all the advice! |
| Mirage | Posted 11/30/2007 5:04:32 PM | show profile The bus may not run to NJ 24/7, but the PATH does. You won't ever be stuck if you live in Hoboken...it's when you live farther out that there's a problem. |
