For example: - What does it mean when a publication stipulates that after the exclusive publication period, it will retain publication rights on a non-exclusive basis? - Reprint rights: what are the standard terms for reprint rights, i.e. if your work is reprinted in a special issue or an anthology? Also, would Mediabistro be willing to develop a document or resource that addresses freelance contract issues in depth? |

Not a big deal. 2. Reprint rights: there are no standard terms, but a halfsies split is the comfortable norm. You should ask (i.e. write into the contract) that you get 50% of the reprint fee that they get if the reprint is sold elsewhere; ask for 50% of your original fee if the material will be reprinted in something your original client will put out (textbook, collection, anthology etc.). They may talk you down to 25% for the second part, that's okay. The important thing is to set a precedcent that they pay for a "second use" that is beyond what your original contract was for. 3. Yeah, tha'd be nice. In the meantime, look up online what you can under "serial rights" and "subsidiary rights." Good luck! |
