| hollisterco | Posted 11/30/2007 1:51:23 PM | show profile Did you know that 47 countries have re-established their embassies in Iraq? Did you know that the Iraqi government currently employs 1.2 million Iraqi people? Did you know that 3100 schools have been renovated, 364 schools are under rehabilitation, 263 new schools are now under construction and 38 new schools have been completed in Iraq ? Did you know that Iraq 's higher educational structure consists of 20 Universities, 46 Institutes or colleges and 4 research centers, all currently operating? Did you know that there are 5 Police Academies in Iraq that produce over 3500 new officers every 8 weeks? Did you know there are more than 1100 building projects going on in Iraq ? They include 364 schools, 67 public clinics, 15 hospitals, 83 railroad stations, 22 oil facilities, 93 water facilities and 69 electrical facilities. Did you know that 96% of Iraqi children under the age of 5 have received the first 2 series of polio vaccinations? Did you know that 4.3 million Iraqi children were enrolled in primary school by mid October? Did you know that there are 1,192,000 cell phone subscribers in Iraq and phone use has gone up 158%? Did you know that Iraq has an independent media that consists of 75 radio stations, 180 newspapers and 10 television stations? Did you know that the Baghdad Stock Exchange opened in June of 2004? Did you know that 2 candidates in the Iraqi presidential election had a televised debate recently? OF COURSE WE DIDN'T KNOW! WHY DIDN'T WE KNOW? BECAUSE... OUR MEDIA WOULDN'T TELL US! Instead of reflecting our love for our country, we get photos of flag burning incidents at Abu Ghraib and people throwing snowballs at the presidential motorcades. Tragically, the lack of accentuating the positive in Iraq serves two purposes: It is intended to undermine the world's perception of the United States thus minimizing consequent support, and it is intended to discourage American citizens . ---- Above facts are verifiable on the Department of Defense web site.. |
| catlondon | Posted 11/30/2007 1:57:17 PM | show profile I just did a search of the DoD web site for at least three of your stats and found nothing. Please include links to the information. |
| hollisterco | Posted 11/30/2007 2:03:20 PM | show profile Here are the links: http://www.defense.gov/ http://www.pentagon.mil/ http://www.defenselink.mil/ http://www.defendamerica.mil/iraq.html http://www.jcs.mil |
| anewstart | Posted 11/30/2007 2:07:12 PM | show profile Thank you... so much for posting this. It's SO important for people to do their own research rather than relying on what we're being told... |
| catlondon | Posted 11/30/2007 2:15:44 PM | show profile To clarify: I know the general site addresses. I did a search of the DoD web site. I want the links to the press releases/briefings where the specific information you mention appears. |
| noname1234 | Posted 11/30/2007 2:17:41 PM | show profile Every one of the "sites" listed above is a U.S. Defense Department web page (note the .mil domain). In fact, the first 3 URLs actually lead to the exact same page. As mentioned above, it's important to do your own research. I, like most americans, am dependent on some 3rd-party to tell me what's up in Iraq, since I've never been there. But sorry, I don't rely on the Bush administration alone to provide accurate information, nor to I rely on anonymous posts by random strangers on a message board. |
| hollisterco | Posted 11/30/2007 2:19:44 PM | show profile Lazy Reporters middleoftheroad - sadly, you are right on the money. The media today is either too lazy to do the research, or they are just fixated on the negaitve. Have you noticed lately that we haven't heard much about Iraq in the news? That's because things are turning around over there and our brave men and women are winning! They are actually doing GOOD for people and changing lives for the better. That doesn't jive with how the media want's to depict this conflict. |
| anewstart | Posted 11/30/2007 2:20:12 PM | show profile I agree with you... I'm not saying to take this info and think "oh. now I know everything going on in Iraq"! |
| anewstart | Posted 11/30/2007 2:23:25 PM | show profile Yes... the majority of people assume that we're being told the truth--whether they believe the White House or the media or some other outlet...my point is just that people need to look a little deeper and do some research before assuming their chosen media outlet, website, whatever is giving us the whole truth. I wish more people would look at the whole picture...I'm a librarian--can't help but want people to read a variety of things! |
| catlondon | Posted 11/30/2007 2:30:37 PM | show profile Hello??? My problem continues to be that I can't find any of these statistics on the DoD web site, where supposedly they can be found. Sorry, but I can't accept facts without verifiable citations from a credible source, and yes, I will accept the DoD as a credible source. So, Hollisterco, do actually know where this info came from and can you give me a specific link--not a homepage link. |
| catlondon | Posted 11/30/2007 2:50:15 PM | show profile I'm going to guess that's a "no" and that Hollisterco actually has no idea if these facts are correct. I can tell you that of the four I've checked, I didn't find any verification out there for them (seach of DoD and then a general google search). So I'm guessing the media didn't tell anyone about them because they aren't true. As for the person who says he/she is a librarian--for shame. You of all people should be encouraging sound fact-checking and research techniques. What a buffoon. |
| anewstart | Posted 11/30/2007 2:53:11 PM | show profile Hello to you! Did you not READ my message where I encouraged just exactly what you suggested? Don't call anyone a buffoon when you don't know what you're talking about. And perhaps Hollister is too busy right this second to get you those exact locations--I know I am. |
| catlondon | Posted 11/30/2007 2:56:54 PM | show profile But I see you're not too busy to take offense. Seriously, if you have citations that I can access on the Web, I'd like to get them. |
| hollisterco | Posted 11/30/2007 3:05:23 PM | show profile Another lazy person catlondon, you evidently don't have the motivation or the apptitude do dig for the info yourself. And you seem to only believe that if it hasn't been reported, it must not be true. You just made my case! Thank you. go here: http://www.snopes.com/politics/war/combatend.asp to check the verification and other corraborating information. |
| HisGirlFriday | Posted 11/30/2007 3:16:08 PM | show profile Cat is simply asking for the reference - why so hostile, Hollister? Here is one I found; go to Dod - type in "iraqi children polio vaccine." into the search and it will pull up a word document as the third hit. It's a report from 2006. Maybe the reason why we haven't seen anything on it recently is that the report was issued so long ago. Also - here is also an interesting discussion on "why isn't the boogeyman media writing about this." From 2005: http://www.nytimes.com/2005/08/15/business/media/15apee.html |
| catlondon | Posted 11/30/2007 3:16:26 PM | show profile Hollistorco: Forgive me, but are you being ironic or do you not realize what snopes.com is? |
| hollisterco | Posted 11/30/2007 3:16:46 PM | show profile catlondon - a couple of things Sorry for not being there at your beckon call! Do you have to have somebody hold your hand through everything? Your resorting to name-calling has just shown everyone how intellectually shallow you really are. So sad. |
| catlondon | Posted 11/30/2007 3:19:48 PM | show profile His Girl Friday: Thanks, I did see that report but didn't dig deep enough. Hollisterco: I haven't called you a name--ever. |
| catlondon | Posted 11/30/2007 3:23:32 PM | show profile HisGirlFriday Thanks for the nytimes link. I wonder why someone would resurrect something that old? Guess I have now been chastised for not checking snopes first! |
| bjoconnorfla | Posted 11/30/2007 3:29:07 PM | show profile Wow! Billions of dollars, five years, thousands of US military lives and by last est 100,000 dead or murdered civilians, not to mention a destroyed infrastructure and economy and millions of refugees -- BUT HEY THEY BUILT 38 WHOLE SCHOOLS!!! Setting aside all the weasel words in that item -- under construction, for instance, means what? A contract got issued to Haliburton -- and the lack of comparitive numbers from before the war, let me just say ... USA USA! USA USA! USA USA! USA USA! USA USA! USA USA! USA USA! USA USA! USA USA! USA USA! USA USA! USA USA! Way to build those schools! If only my son were old enough to die just so that a school could be painted while murderous tribes continue to slaughter each other under the indifferent eye of a dysfunctional puppet regime! |
| astrahook | Posted 11/30/2007 3:39:56 PM | show profile hollister? a poser surf company and obviously a fraud |
| hollisterco | Posted 11/30/2007 3:42:59 PM | show profile Thank you cat It wasn't me you called a name it was middleoftheroad for whom you called a bufoon. I just realized that I called you lazy and I apologize for that. I posted these "Did you know?" comments (I know that they are a few years old but still valid) to make the point that when things are happening in Iraq, we never hear about it. I have friends and colleagues there that are putting their lives on the line for the benefit of the "free world". We have to win this! The snopes link was to prove that this wasn't one of those false things going around, plus it had some corroborating info in it. I'm glad I sparked your interest in what is really going on over there and the lack of reporters and media outlets bringing that news to us. I'm glad you found some of that info on your own! You seem like a smart and likable person. |
| hollisterco | Posted 11/30/2007 3:47:16 PM | show profile asstrahook - luv you too DUDE! |
| hollisterco | Posted 11/30/2007 3:52:11 PM | show profile Wow BJ You are so full of possitve thoughts and comments, it's over whelming! Keep drinking that koolaid pal! |
| astrahook | Posted 11/30/2007 4:17:30 PM | show profile do you shred the hollister pro crew? |
