So the Hollywood writers are striking. I wonder how much annually newspaper corporations make in comparison to the millions of dollars that Hollywood studios generate? These writers are demanding their share. Along the same lines, are journalists getting a fair shake when it comes to corporation profits?

That depends on the newspaper. There are some small hometown weeklies that are giveaways/throwaways and charge relatively little to advertise. Some of the Tribune and Hearst dailies with circulations of about 20-40K are making money. Some of the papers are unionized and had picket lines in front of them because management wasn't giving journalists cost of living increases, let alone a fair shake when they were making profits.

Go on journalismjobs.com and look at salaries at different papers in different areas of the country. Connecticut is a very expensive place to live, with rents that are not far behind NYC, and the salaries for journalists range from $20 - $50K. The only way you can live on $20K is if you have a rich spouse or a big trust fund.
