| bookmap | Posted 12/4/2007 5:43:20 PM | show profile Once again, I consult the boards for all opinions on the next move I make in the search for my first job post-graduation. I've been phone interviewing with a New York publisher for two different positions. One is in editorial and the other in global rights. Of the two, I would love the editorial asst. position, but it would start immediately without giving me much time at all to pick up and move. The second position in global rights would allow me a little extra time (like Dec. 19, possibly after the holidays, which is still quite soon). Ideally, I need the most time to move, but do I go for the position that I don't really love just to get a foot in the door, or should I go for the one I want while simultaneously inducing a panic attack for a quick move? Neither position is guaranteed, but I have to let HR know which side I'm leaning toward asap! *Note: I can't ask family/friends these questions and get realistic answers...I appreciate everyone's input here who work in similar areas and in NYC. |
| AWC | Posted 12/4/2007 6:05:51 PM | show profile You shouldn't make a job decision based on moving time -- I would advise you to pursue the job you really want. I assume that this publisher knows where you're currently living, and realizes that if they make an offer, you will have to relocate. If they really want you, they will be willing to work out some compromise on the start date. |
| HisGirlFriday | Posted 12/4/2007 7:45:31 PM | show profile Take the job you want. Especially since you're only talking about a few days maybe a weeks in difference. If one post would allow you to take, say 2 months off to travel, that would be different .... |
| webtastic | Posted 12/5/2007 1:35:40 AM | show profile Take the better job. You will get over the shock. True story: When I got my first job in NYC, my editor asked me when I could start -- it was a Thursday afternoon. I said two weeks, and he said, "How about Monday?" I said one week. He said, "How about Monday?" I started Monday. |
| writesonwater | Posted 12/5/2007 2:17:21 AM | show profile Absolutely go for the job you want. THe moving window is a little thing compared to the time you'll be in the job. You can always go with your toothbrush and a suitcase and then come back some other weekend or enlist the help of loved ones or just sell or donate much of the stuff. Our move to the state we live in now came after my husband accepted a job, with interviews over the phone, under the caveat that he coud get across half a continent in a four-day window. We loaded up the car and got him there -- I followed later. |
| ISR | Posted 12/5/2007 9:34:53 AM | show profile No question. Take the editorial job. Best to start yourself out on the career track you want, rather than trying to renegotiate it later. |
| bookmap | Posted 12/5/2007 3:21:07 PM | show profile thanks for the advice...I agree that I'll get over the shock and quick move if it means I'll be on the right career track in editorial. |
