It seems that after graduation your supposed to get a job, but I'm finding every position wants me to have all this experience that I can't aquire yet since no one wants to hire me. I graduated in Communications/PR/Journalism, had an internship which only proved that I didn't want to go into PR and now I'm thinking that I would like to get into Freelance writing or even design for publications. If I have no published works to speak of and no experience in design how and where should I start looking to gain the knowledge and get started on some work?

Where are you? If you're in smaller markets, you'll find more forgiving requirements for entry-level jobs that will land you at small, daily newspapers or weeklies. Those jobs are rigorous and require a lot of hours, but you'll also build up your clip portfolio pretty quickly.

A situation like you describe is why journalism majors are so often encouraged to get internships and/or work on their college paper.

Unless you want to go back to school and get a degree in graphic design, I would forget about that option. Publication design is a very competitive field, so unless you're actually qualified, you will probably not be hired.

Without knowing the details of your situation, it sounds like your degree was perhaps a little too "general" -- that may be why employers are not responding to you. I would probably take the advice of the post above and try to get an entry level position at a small market newspaper or other publication to build your writing experience.
