How does one break into the uber tough world of publishing. I am trying to find a job as an editorial assistant and have come up empty. I have started networking but wondered if there is anything else that I should be doing. Any advice?

Thanks

What kinds of networking have you been doing?

I found it really helpful to schedule some informational interviews with publishers...you wouldn't be asking about jobs with that publisher, but rather just meeting to talk about the company and the publishing industry in general. That way they can put a face with a resume and contact you if they hear of anything within their company or others.

I have been doing informational interviews. One person who was gracious enough to speak to me, is going to contact some of her colleagues and set up another round of informational interviews for me.

I think it's just a waiting game then...you never realize how long a company will hold on to your resume. I've been interviewing now with a publisher who received my resume over 3 months ago, so you never know. I'm in your same position (though I went to a publishing program this summer) so guess that's all the advice I've got!

Keep Looking .
I myself was in the same position you are in not to long ago, and I learned you truly have to be patient. Finding a job as an editorial assistant is very difficult because they are looking at experience. If you lack the experience use your skills to your advantage, and be passionate during the interview. Don't beg, but let them know that you want the experience, and you are willing to do what is possible to excel.
You can also apply for a different position in publishing just to get your foot in the door, its easier to move up within a company, because they know you have the experience and you are willing to learn more.

After searching for 5 months I found a job in publishing. It's not as an editorial assistant, but I love my job.
Keep looking, send out as many resumes as possible. Along with mediabistro, search other career websites, as well as the publishing houses websites.

Good luck!

Wish me luck too
I've been trying to get into this field for over 2 years now and I still haven't made it. I've worked other jobs just to pay the bills but working for a Publishing house is very hard - especially if you don't have any internships. My interest in Publishing is starting to wane b/c of this but I haven't given up completely.
