Topic: Fascist America, in 10 easy steps

| Stanley_Milgram | Posted 12/7/2007 11:11:36 AM | show profile From the Naomi Wolf article. Link below. Interesting reading. So long democracy, twas good to know ya. -- If you look at history, you can see that there is essentially a blueprint for turning an open society into a dictatorship. That blueprint has been used again and again in more and less bloody, more and less terrifying ways. But it is always effective. It is very difficult and arduous to create and sustain a democracy - but history shows that closing one down is much simpler. You simply have to be willing to take the 10 steps. As difficult as this is to contemplate, it is clear, if you are willing to look, that each of these 10 steps has already been initiated today in the United States by the Bush administration. http://www.guardian.co.uk/usa/story/ 0,,2064157,00.html |

| Nikongirl | Posted 12/7/2007 11:55:04 AM | show profile Thanks Stanley, I was pretty sure American democracy was lost when GWB stole the first election with his brother's help, I was SURE that America would not let that happen again in 2004, but alas, it not only DID happen again, Americas seem not to care enough to do anything about it. The WORST president in America EVER should have been thrown in jail a few years ago for crimes against humanity on more than one continent, again, he is allowed to continue. Getting caught out on his recent ?Iran is a serious threat? scam makes him mad as hell but he keeps his focus to start a war with Iran before he leaves office. IF he leaves office....ya just never know, he may declare himself President for Life - So America while you still have a small window of time before the 2008 elections somebody in that country ought to make sure the voting system is overhauled and go back to legitimate, proven vote method, or you will find yourselves with another scary, democracy destroying freak in office. Me, I do not live there for a reason. Back in the love it or leave it days, I left it. |
| UGoGirl | Posted 12/7/2007 11:59:07 AM | show profile I think this is all true. But I think (God I hope) that since Bush's days are numbered, we don't have a whole lot more to fear from him. He tried, and he failed (again, again, and again). To me there is a very real danger that as our country heads into ever more crises in the coming years (economic meltdown, more natural disasters, fuel shortages, social security debacle, climate change) that if we have another leader like Bush, he/she could use a true national emergency to attempt to seize control. And it could seem like a good idea at the time (in a way, who wouldn't want a benevolent dictator to take charge and help get us out of the mess we've put ourselves in). But even a seemingly benevolent dictator can quickly go bad. I think there is a real threat there... I think this deserves careful attention, that even someone who seems like they are doing things for all the good reasons can transform the country in ways none of us will like. |
| keltoi2 | Posted 12/7/2007 12:45:07 PM | show profile Sinclair Lewis' 1935 novel "It Can't Happen Here" warned about how easy it would be for America to drift into dictatorship. All you need is a foreign "enemy", real or imagined; dark hints of "fellow travelers" among us; a state of fear carefully nurtured by politicians and a lapdog media (as has masterfully been done by BushCo since 9/11 and is now being taken up by most of the GOP candidates); an "us and them" mentality; and a never-ending need for more and more secrecy and "security", and it's down the slippery slope we go. |
| Nikongirl | Posted 12/7/2007 1:13:56 PM | show profile Well, I would invite you all to Oh Canada but we have our idiot, GWB wannabe dictating right now, soooo as soon as we call an election and get rid of him, I will let you know. Beautiful thing about Canadian politics, we can call an election ANYTIME! Gotta love that. We are just letting him sink a little farther into the current scandal that is rocking the former PM Mulroney, which is proving to have a few ties to the Harper gang as well. |
| chucho | Posted 12/7/2007 1:26:48 PM | show profile Oh, and don't forget creating "thoughtcrimes" (to borrow from George Orwell) against the opposition to the social tide. Being a "liberal" is heading toward the "thoughtcrime" territory when you have conservatives always trying to tie being liberal with being for the enemy. But I am not nearly ready to give up the ghost. The country is roughly divided. But remember that the last time fascism started to form like a puss-filled boil on the ass of America (led by another alcoholic: McCarthy) it was eventually stamped out by progressive forces. If it ever came down to it: progressives would win a war against conservatives. They have more money (the private citizens, like Warren Buffet and Bill Gates, etc.) and the most powerful progressives live in the regions of America that hold the welfare purse strings of so many conservative states that leech federal money (ie get back more than they pay in, with the noticeable exception of Texas, to its credit). Sure, conservatives can steal elections and gerrymander, but in actual combat they would lose by attrition alone. But you wouldn't have to fight conservatives. All you have to do is airdrop boxes of methamphetamines and Jack Daniels into rural America and they would either self destruct or be too busy making single teenage moms and arguing over the assets of the mobile homes in divorce court :) |
| keltoi2 | Posted 12/7/2007 2:39:19 PM | show profile Excellent article. Thanks for the heads-up, Stanley. |
| Nikongirl | Posted 12/7/2007 4:46:43 PM | show profile It should be mandatory that every person running for office, especially president should have a very through mental health evaluation before they can be deemed fit to run for the position. That might weed out the nut bags before they can do damage. Just a thought. |
| Olbypocrisy | Posted 12/7/2007 11:07:28 PM | show profile Worst President ever?? Did you forget about Jimmy Carter?? Bush Derangement Syndrome lives on!!!! |
| crimedog | Posted 12/8/2007 1:03:42 AM | show profile No we didn't forget Carter - a great man undercut by a seriously flawed man named Reagen who committed treason in order to steal the election by selling and trading arms to the Ayatollah to win the release of the hostages. |
| BC | Posted 12/12/2007 11:44:25 PM | show profile Carter Was Submarined by Mr. George Bush Then-private citizen George Bush (the elder, of course) made a deal with Iran to delay the release of the hostages until after the 1980 election. The lesson? Even when the ruling class isn't in The White House, they still rule. |
| chucho | Posted 12/14/2007 5:21:29 AM | show profile I agree with Wolf's "Blueprint Theory", and my biggest fear is seeing Blackwater thugs policing protests in the streets of New York. On the other hand, I don't think people should compare pre-WWII Germany to the US. Pre WWII Germany was barely a democracy (remember: they had WWI, then hyper inflation, then a depression, and not many years of dmeocracy before the rise of Hitler). What many here seem to fail to realize is that conservatives don't like heavy state thuggery, either. The second some idiot president starts using Blackwater to crack skulls and detain Americans en masse is the second the conservative redneck types start oiling up their guns. |
| Olbypocrisy | Posted 12/14/2007 8:48:57 AM | show profile Remeber Hitler was a liberal. To stop fascism, we must stop liberalism. Its the same. Liberals tell you whats ok to say and think.Kids can't play tag or dodgeball because of liberals. What will offend liberals next????? |
| chucho | Posted 12/14/2007 12:40:30 PM | show profile Hitler was a liberal? What the fuck are you talking about? Do you jut say things to be an ass? What's liberal about being a right-wing Catholic who formed private militias to round up undesirables and send them to extermination camps? Why do have to be such a schmuck? |
| Stanley_Milgram | Posted 12/14/2007 1:51:22 PM | show profile why do you even take him that seriously, chucho? he's been advertising his moronitude multiple times a day for weeks now, probably longer under different aliases. at best, his posts are a warm confirmation of the dimness of the wingnut intellect. you dignify it too much by bothering to respond. puts you if not on his level, than at least on crimedog's. |
| Olbypocrisy | Posted 12/14/2007 2:31:32 PM | show profile "We are socialists, we are enemies of today's capitalistic economic system for the exploitation of the economically weak, with its unfair salaries, with its unseemly evaluation of a human being according to wealth and property instead of responsibility and performance, and we are all determined to destroy this system under all conditions." This is from a speech hitler gave You could see any Liberal or Democrat giving a speech like this. |
| Olbypocrisy | Posted 12/14/2007 2:53:27 PM | show profile "different aliases" more liberal conspiracy theories |
| crimedog | Posted 12/14/2007 7:30:55 PM | show profile Stanley - you have the least imagination of anyone on this board. It's not about sinking to Olby's level because you are there and seem to revel in his inepitude. |
| UGoGirl | Posted 12/15/2007 12:17:14 AM | show profile Wow, crimedog, what's with the attack on Stanley? |
| Stanley_Milgram | Posted 12/15/2007 1:49:07 AM | show profile was that an attack? I realize crimedog's post was in english but otherwise i found it to be semantically empty. |
| crimedog | Posted 12/15/2007 9:43:04 AM | show profile ugo - it wasn't an attack - just a simple point. If Stanley thinks there's a high road to be taken with these trolls prove it. They'll never leave even if the only conversing is amongst themselves. So if others choose to slap them around so be it. I couldn't care less what Stanley posts he has every right to do so - just don't take pot shots at others who do it differently. There's an assumption all those with a liberal bent act like Harry Reid or Nancy Pelosi - that's a bunch of bull. If you choose not to defend your point of view and let the brainless scream over you - they win. It got Bush elected and buried Kerry. I see even Stanley gets a bit riled by the hateful creeps. |
| chucho | Posted 12/15/2007 11:52:44 AM | show profile Olby , equating American liberalism to Hitler's Nationalsozialismus is not only exposing your utter ignorance of history (not surprising for a modern day Bushie conservative) but it's actually deeply offensive. There are plenty of Jewish liberals in America who would find your comments more than just absurd and idiotic. As such: go fuck yourself. How's that for free speech? |
| crimedog | Posted 12/15/2007 12:14:28 PM | show profile Yeah Chucho! I'm mad and I ain't gonna take it anymore. |
