| TVchick | Posted 12/9/2007 11:17:42 AM | show profile I am furious and appalled at the fact that he's gaining in the polls. He has not one leg to stand on policy-wise yet everyone's going ape sh*t about him! This man just campaigned in a church! That's what our Founding fathers had warned us against, and basically forbade! I am stunned and saddened at the fact that people in this country are supporting a preacher basically, who doesn't believe in evolution. IN 2007 this is where we arrive. |
| UGoGirl | Posted 12/9/2007 3:27:22 PM | show profile He's gaining popularity for the same reason Bush gained popularity pre-2000. He's got a friendly face, down-to-earth, doesn't seem a whole lot smarter or fancier than the rest of us. A guy we would like to have over for a BBQ. |
| nellie bly | Posted 12/9/2007 4:15:22 PM | show profile another Repugnatcan idiot, but at least he doesnt seem to have a mean streak like Rudy. It's weird to comtemplate a general election that's either NYer vs NYer (Rudy vs Hillary) or Ark vs Ark (Huckabee vs Hillary). let's have some geographical diversity please |

| crimedog | Posted 12/9/2007 11:46:01 PM | show profile Russert took it to Rudy today all about calling him an opportunist crook doing business with the pariahs of the world. That was solid work. |

| catlondon | Posted 12/10/2007 12:09:20 PM | show profile As a former Iowan, I'm not surprised Huckabee is gaining in the polls. There's a very strong religious conservative base in Iowa, Tom Harkin notwithstanding. However, I wish Huckabee was just another looney Republican. He's actually very strong on education and environmental issues--one of the few Republicans to take climate change seriously. He did well in his response to Katrina. Believe it or not, Republicans don't like him because he raised taxes in Arkansas to pay for roads and schools and he's been "soft" on immigration. But on social issues, he's the devil in a dark suit and he's also mean, petty, and thin-skinned. I just hope moderate Democratics don't get taken in taken in by his humor and "likability." |
| wineaux | Posted 12/11/2007 2:33:36 PM | show profile ::::::::::sigh::::::::::::::: Poor Ron Paul doesn't have a chance against any of these bottom feeders |
| UGoGirl | Posted 12/11/2007 11:25:58 PM | show profile If the US elected Huckabee president, I might lose all hope for this country. But so far it looks like just about any of the Democratic contenders would beat any of the Republican contenders. For now, it's the Democrats to lose. |
| chucho | Posted 12/12/2007 8:55:23 AM | show profile Ron Paul voted against Campaign Finance Reform and it looks like he doesn't have the balls to make a stand on divisive issues (he has a lot of NVs on his voting record -- no votes -- which to me says a lot about a candidate's lack of conviction on myriad issues). http://www.vote-smart.org/voting_category.php?can_id=BC031929 Also, I'm tired of everyone making him out to be some Willie-Nelson-style libertarian. His image belies his voting record. |
| UGoGirl | Posted 12/15/2007 12:08:17 PM | show profile Huckabee and big tobacco Good article on Huckabee in the NYTimes. *** When Mike Huckabee became lieutenant governor of Arkansas in 1993, he complained of being burdened by college tuition bills for his son, the expenses of two residences ? one in Texarkana and the other in Little Rock ? and the cost of commuting between the two. ...To bridge the gap between his income and his expenses, Mr. Huckabee and a few close political advisers came up with a plan. They formed a nonprofit organization that raised money for Mr. Huckabee to travel the country promoting conservative politics to fellow ministers and attacking Hillary Rodham Clinton?s health care plan. In its three-year life span, the organization, Action America, collected $119,916 from a dozen or so donors. Among them were former Senator Bob Dole?s political action committee, an Arkansas cotton gin owner who had been jailed for stock fraud, and R. J. Reynolds, the tobacco giant that had opposed the Clinton health plan. As for Mr. Huckabee, he ended up with $61,500 for his efforts before becoming governor in July 1996 and shuttering the group. As information about the secretive group began to leak out in 1997, Democrats in Arkansas pressed for the identity of its donors, which Mr. Huckabee has refused to disclose. ...As for Action America, new details have emerged, first reported by Newsweek, about the extent of tobacco money behind it and the way the industry tried to use Mr. Huckabee?s rising profile among conservatives to create grass-roots opposition to the Clinton effort, which would have raised taxes on cigarettes. Mr. Huckabee, who was president of Action America, has denied knowing that Reynolds money was behind the group ? a claim other officers of Action America dispute. But long before Mr. Huckabee began seeking the Republican presidential nomination, he resisted efforts to identify Action America?s donors. ...Two political associates, J. J. Vigneault and Greg Graves, who were also consultants to R. J. Reynolds, a division of Reynolds American, approached Mr. Huckabee with the idea of creating a nonprofit so he could earn money from speaking engagements ? and, at the same time, drum up opposition to the Clinton plan. Mr. Huckabee was the only person paid by the organization. ...In an e-mail message on Friday, the Huckabee campaign described Action America as a ?nonprofit set up to promote conservative ideas and policies? and reiterated Mr. Huckabee?s assertion that he did not know tobacco money was behind the group. But Mr. Vigneault said Mr. Huckabee ?absolutely? knew of the Reynolds connection. Mr. Huckabee not only knew that Mr. Vigneault and Mr. Graves were Reynolds lobbyists, Mr. Vigneault said, but he also met Reynolds executives in his apartment in Little Rock. ?There?s no way he could not have known about the money from R. J. Reynolds,? Mr. Vigneault said. ?If he?s saying he didn?t know about the Reynolds money, he?s been less than truthful.? In recent years, Mr. Huckabee has lost 110 pounds and become an advocate for healthy living. In 2003, he signed a ban in Arkansas on smoking in the workplace and backed smoking cessation programs. Jay Bradford, a former Democratic state senator who had criticized Action America?s secrecy, said he was not surprised to learn of the tobacco money. ?He firmly stood with the tobacco manufacturers,? said Mr. Bradford, now director of behavioral health for the Arkansas Department of Health and Human Services. ?He was with them all the way.? |
