| sarahday3000 | Posted 12/8/2007 7:29:31 PM | show profile | email poster Hi I've graduated from a City university in May 2007 with a B.A. in Journalism. I've interned at Air America Radio for 9 months and a local newspaper for 6 months that earn me clips. However, I cannot find a job in journalism. It may be that my resume is poorly written or that I don't have much experience to begin with. So I've decided to take a legal proofreading course in hopes of attaining a proofreading job. Has anyone here taken these kinds of courses and found work through both freelancing and agencies? If so, please offer me some advice because I'm at my wit's end and very depressed. I feel like my degree is garbage and worthless! |
| jkdscribe | Posted 12/9/2007 1:51:52 PM | show profile it's not worthless Just keep in mind it's a competitive field. Keep at it. FInd someone to go over your resume with you. If you're near your university--or any university--see if they have a writing center that will help you with it, or old professors of yours that you trust. Find a job in the meantime that will allow you to go after what you want. |
| hurldog | Posted 12/9/2007 3:06:29 PM | show profile I wouldn't rule out another internship if writing is your thing (I'd only do a paid one though, but that's me). Also, it's been what, 6 months? I know that seems like an eternity when you're going through it, but in the grand scheme of your entire working life, it hasn't been all that long. Just be persistant, stay in the game and good things will happen. |
| Jen480 | Posted 12/9/2007 6:04:42 PM | show profile I agree w/ hurldog. I graduated a few years ago, and it took most of my friends in journalism (incl. myself) about 1 to 1.5 years to land a full-time gig at a magazine/newspaper. So sit tight, mi amigo, it'll happen. I too recommend doing an internship, and also think seriously about freelancing for a local publication. You need to keep your skills and clips up to speed. |
| ManhattanMatt | Posted 12/9/2007 9:38:08 PM | show profile You're looking to find a job in "journalism" ... Please be specific. Radio? TV? Magazines? Newspaper? |
| sarahday3000 | Posted 12/9/2007 10:18:54 PM | show profile | email poster Okay, I will be more specific. I'm looking for a job in print media, which includes newspapers or magazines. I appreciate all of the posters' suggestions and I will most likely look for a paying intership that hires the interns or something. But I would like more responses in regards to my question on legal proofreading. If there is anyone here who has gained work in this profession, please tell me how so I can make money from this also so I won't starve to death waiting for jobs/internships to call me. And what legal proofreading agencies are the best out of the ones listed below: Columbia Proofreaders Moritz Legal Proofreading Proofreader Training |
