Like LinkedIn, if you're not already on Facebook, you may want to look into it. I've just started to pay attention to it, posting the occasional search there, and just this week, heard from a fantastic candidate, and also a great new client...so I think that activity is picking up steam there.

Just an fyi!

Hi, Pam,

I've been on facebook for about two years, but I've never used it for job networking--more as a tool for connecting with people I haven't heard from in years back in a past life. How does one network successfully on social sites like facebook (or myspace)? And what do you mean when you say you "post searches" on facebook?

I'm a recruiter, so a 'search' is a job opening that I'm trying to fill. There is a whole job section on Facebook with openings listed. I also have a large network (over 1000 direct contacts) on LinkedIn, and some of those people have asked to connect on Facebook, so I've accepted all of those invitations, which led to a referral for a new search/client. So that is how I've been using it for networking.

Hope that helps!

Hi Pam and Unemployed gal,

I've been on Facebook for a while but I've just recently started using it as a networking tool. In particular, I've met some great Mediabistro folks through the site.

Send me a msg if either of you would like to network with me on Facebook!

Anyone on Doostang?
It caters to a similar demographic as facebook, but it's more job search-oriented. I'm signed up, but I haven't used it very much, because I'm not actively job hunting and I'm on so many other social networking sites.

I had no idea facebook had a strong networking angle like this. I'm a little embarassed. This is definitely something I have to check out.

I like LinkedIn for this purpose, though you have to pay for the full features. I'm still skeptical about these services for finding jobs, but LinkedIn does seem to have a lot of contacts in the industry. (And with the basic pay serviceI think you can cold-contact three of them a month.) It offers a very user-friendly way to build you resume online, too. I use Facebook for keeping in contact with colleagues and MySpace for close friends (as in, non-professional friends, only people I've met in person). But I find that I don't use Facebook that much, and definitely not for professional contacts and job leads. I don't like the recent news about the way it tells people on your contact list what you buy on Amazon. I'd rather pay for a more professional service than deal with a free service playing with personal info in an attempt at profitability.
