Help everybody!

I have been hired by a small graphic design firm to write an email sales letter to prospective clients. Any ideas about what to charge?

Also, any suggestions about what to charge for writing content for an entire website? I'm fairly new to copywriting.

I might suggest either dribble or Cyrus for this question -- seems to me they both have experience here. What I have to offer might not help you much, but your question caught my eye so I'm thinking out loud here.

Are they small, new and struggling? Or small, boutique and successful? What they perceive they can afford might vary accordingly.

I try not to do anything for less than $300 except for one particular client I have. Great marketing letters can sell for considerably more, I've heard.

If it was me, I'd break the website down into pieces -- sort of per page, and take into account how much time it was going to take. If they provide you with something to go on or you have to concoct material from scratch should also make a difference.

You might want to post a version of this question in the design section to see if any little firms will give you insight -- keeping in mind that design firms have no hesitation charging perfectly good money by the hour or per project.

Also, they probably really need your skills. Many designers are NOT word/content people.

Good luck ...

It's such a delicate line, establishing what you'll charge. I have one particularly favorite client that I write regularly for and I really need to up my rate. I like the work and i want it to keep coming so I have to balance my needs with their abilities.

Someone told me the best stance for negotiating was when you were fully prepared to walk away -- and with them, I'm not.

Hopefully some other writers will weigh in with some good advice.

I've written a couple of sales letters for a small company, and I charged $500 each time. That included a first draft, revisions, and a final draft.

For an entire Web site rewrite, complete with mission statement, company history, strategic partnerships, and product descriptions, I charged $5,000.

In general, I try to charge per project for copywriting, but if I am pressed for an hourly rate, I usually say between $60 and $75 an hour, depending on how much work I think is involved. I am in Southern California, not New York, in case that is helpful for rate comparisons.
