Topic: Why is advertising lumped in with publications

these are two totally different professional disciplines. A journalist and a copywriter are not the same. Magazine publication layout and ad art direction are not the same thing.

By lumping them all together, you are cheating those of use with specialized skills and are also wasting the time of clients who need these specialized skills.

It is tiring to keep running across these so called marketplace sites which do not take the needs of the user into account. ("Know your user." a basic caveat of business.)

You are absolutely correct, but there's no point in fighting it. The sad fact is that many top magazine writers keep quoting the same talking heads (especially in health articles) and some of those people aren't even Board-certified doctors! I work for a local newspaper that uses a lot of wire stories from other towns and cities. Credit unions, health care providers, and others have to buy ad space to give readers legitimate knowledge. It's sad because some of what they have to say really is important, such as a procedure that's a better alternative to a hysterectomy or that credit unions are not necessarily available to city workers, but may be open to the public and have a higher satisfaction ranking than most banks. When I write advertising copy, I use my journalistic skills to make the copy meatier. Writers have to be flexible if they want to make a living.

Yeah, copywriting and journalism are two different professions, but a lot of freelancers here do both, so the overlap isn't as unusual as you seem to think. Really, I am not sure what your gripe is. This board is primary focused on journalism. And if you feel this board is too scattered for your personal needs, there are tons of other media boards on the Internet, so why not just seek out one with the narrow focus you want?
