"He stands, above all, for stability?stability before freedom, stability before choice, stability in a country that has hardly seen it for a hundred years."

Yes, we, the Russians, can stably count on the police NOT to come when needed.

In St.Petersburg, where I live, we can stably count on the police's hotline being BUSY 75% of the time. And I know what I am talking about for in summer time I often call them at night because we regularly have noisy merry-making near our house. And, let me say it again, you can count on the police not to come even if you get through.

And so on and so forth...

I wonder if Putin would be man of the year if oil wasn't selling for $90/barrel?

I caught some of the reasoning behind the selection. Russia is at a crossroads and this is the face of new Russia no matter how uncomfortable.

What people forget is that Time's "man of the year" designation isn't necessarily for honoring someone, but for noting people who have had a profound influence on the world, good or bad. So it's either stupidity or complete posturing for people like ROmney to call the choice "disgusting."

Mag Girl - that's the point. Putin's a danger and force. He's livid with the US painting him some backwoods creature with little substance or intellect.

Putin's also a fine poster boy for the rousing success of the Neocon's vision of democracy sweeping the globe thanks to the Iraq Attaq.
