I was about 3 semesters from rapping up a journalism degree before I left school to pursue an internet start-up. The start-up failed and instead of going right back to school, I landed at a weekly newspaper. I'm generating clips and getting good experience at writing under a deadline.

my question: what kind of jumping off point can this paper be?

should i pursue clips at other venues (online/print mags) or go back for the degree?

Ideally, I'd like to write long-form investigative journalism/magazine pieces or more human interest material as heard on This American Life.

What's the next step to get to those types of places?

Quality clips are your best ally in landing future work. A weekly newspaper is an excellent start. If you think the clips you've garnered are quality that show your skills, take them to the magazines you would like to work for, along with a GOOD covery letter, and possibly some story ideas to tease the editor with.
