I publish a citywide, free monthly paper called the Durham Skywriter. This month's cover story was very well received and caused a [positive] stir; I'll further explore the topic by inviting the person I wrote about to be a guest on my public affairs radio show, so I'm not really "done" with it.

A rival publication emailed me, asking for permission to run the same article in her publication, also a free monthly. I'm a little uncomfortable about that. Of course, I've seen identical articles in rival newspapers that belong to the same syndicate/organization, but don't know how to feel about the reprinting of an original, locally generated article, even though I'll get "credit" for having written it. This rival publication is run by a person who doesn't have the best reputation (re: ethics). My first inclination is to say no, but I wonder how you might handle the same situation ... ?

Oh yes, one more thing -- her circulation is inferior to mine (I have far more distribution points and cover a much, much wider area), at least here in town. Supposedly, her publication is also circulated a bit in a couple of nearby towns (which doesn't matter to me, because this particular story is a very local one).

Looking forward to getting your advice ...

You're not supposed to help rivals; that's why they're rivals, after all. Don't do this.
