| a bit bookish | Posted 12/28/2007 6:52:45 PM | show profile | email poster Hi all, I'm looking for some very basic advice on how to get started freelancing. I have a full-time position at a major publishing company but I am toying with the idea of writing and/or editing on the side to mix things up a little. I've done some very minimal things before but would be pretty green and am really just looking for something every once in a while. I'd love to build on my skill set while keeping in touch with my creative side, if I can. Thank you in advance to all who write helpful replies. |
| Ms_M2you | Posted 12/30/2007 1:30:49 PM | show profile | email poster Be interesting I see myself as a semi-professional freelance writer - I've been writing for magazines for 15 years now but minimally. The funny thing is, I have yet to really pitch pieces until recently. More often than not, I have been called up by editors (who I have met at parties) who say ohdearg-dhelpmeIneedthispiecebyfriday. In my case, all I have done is made it known that I am available and reliable (for the most part) and I know about niche things - in my case, black history, dance, photography, and interdisciplinary theatre. You have the advantage of working for a publishing company - surely you have associates and co-workers who also do editing work for magazines etc? One caveat - freelancing while doing a full time job can be stressful. Twice I have had to back down from a gig because I could not do both. Now I am very careful about when I pitch and to whom. So keep that in mind. ------ Kristine Maitland writer, critic, blogger http//www.kristinemaitland.com |
