If you're a new freelancer querying a publication, how many clips (hard copies) do you usually mail them to keep on file? I was thinking three would be the magic number, but if have several good samples, how many is too many?

I used to send no more than 5 when I was on the journalism side. However, today it's easy to put your portfolio on the Web, give people a URL and put all your clips there. I'm not suggesting this completely replace hard copies, but rather be used as a supplement.

Hard copy vs. links to stories doesn't really matter to me as an editor. What I like is the ability to look up the initial query from a writer and ideally find an article he or she has already written that would make the person a good match for an upcoming assignment I may have in mind. So I guess in my opinion you really can't send too many (provided the packet you mail is a manageable size to file away).
