I want to learn how to use these programs in order to get a job as a copy editor. However, I don't have the money to buy them in order to try them out. Can I learn how to use Quarkxpress and Indesign from reading books on how they work? If so, which books are recommended?

You can actually download a free 30 day trial of each program from their websites that could help you learn the basics without having to purchase both. In my experience, once you learn one program the other is pretty easy to figure out. I always used Quark in the past and was able to pick up on InDesign with no problems.

There are plenty of tutorials online to help with either program. I'm not sure about the best book though - there are so many out there now. Good luck!

Quark versus In Design
I work at a major ad agency in New York, we only use In Design. Quark is no longer a standard in the ad industry, don't know if it's the same elsewhere. If you want to learn the best way is by doing. Books help but when it comes to knowing a program you have to use it. You can get either program by downloading peer-to-peer using Limewire. Just use it for training and then delete it.

Newspapers are also switching to InDesign.

InDesign
Learn it, forget about Quark (stay away from old shops that still run Quark also). Learn InDesign by using it - download the trial, get some books, take a class from your local community college. Learn, learn, learn!!!
