Wait a damn minute! I had a tryst w/ Bleak as well! Dammit Bleak, you aren't the loner you profess to be.

My heart is broken, positively broken!

1. If you were to have lived before, what do you imagine your life was like?
I'd have lived in Montmartre in 1888, spent a lot of time on Rue Abbesses drinking absinthe and chatting with Toulouse Lautrec.

2. If you created your own 'In' and 'Out' list, what is in and what is out in your opinion?
In: oatmeal
Out: steak

3. Have you ever considered getting cosmetic surgery?
No

4. What do you find absolutely ridiculous?
the way Americans live their lives

5. Do you consider yourself to be an expert in anything?
I'm an expert at knowing what people are interested in.

6. Have you cried yet in 2008?
No

7. Who do you find fascinating?
Ricky Gervais

8. Have you ever been physically assaulted?
No

9. What freaks you out?
The Mutter Museum in Philadelphia. They have a large collection of skulls from the 1800s that have writing on them that explains the cause of death (many of them suicides).

10. What is your favorite new song?
I don't listen to new music

~Bonus Question~
How about starting off the new year with a confession. Have anything you want to share?
No

1. If you were to have lived before, what do you imagine your life was like?

ah.

i tend to have stupidly bad luck in this life. one small, recent example: my bf and i checked our bags for our l.a. trip at exactly the same time, yet mine was marked "late" both times and lost once; his was neither "late" nor lost either time.

i think in a past life, i must have been a pain in the ass who didn't appreciate good fortune, and i'm paying for it this time around.

2. If you created your own 'In' and 'Out' list, what is in and
what is out in your opinion?

in: generosity, hope, careful consideration
out: easy fixes, willful obtuseness, cynicism

and yeah, dubya, you are OUTTA here.

3. Have you ever considered getting cosmetic surgery?
want, yes. consider, no. and so, my non-prominent cheekbones will always be a vague disappointment to me (better luck in my next life! : ) )

4. What do you find absolutely ridiculous?
people who complain about snags in their luxury. a woman recently sued a florist for millions because they gave her flowers in (slightly) the wrong shade for her wedding. would make me cry if it didn't make me laugh.

5. Do you consider yourself to be an expert in anything?
i am an expert on song lyrics, esp. from the 70s, 80s, and 90s (plus all Beatles songs)

6. Have you cried yet in 2008?
not yet. any minute now?

7. Who do you find fascinating?
just discovered "the dog whisperer." amazing!

8. Have you ever been physically assaulted?
sad to say, i have.

9. What freaks you out?
recently: reading about what lies behind the fda approval process.

10. What is your favorite new song?
i like this rapper i just heard called mr. q.

~Bonus Question~
How about starting off the new year with a confession. Have anything you want to share?
i am not having an affair, with bleak or with anyone else. but sometimes i want to. i think my bf feels the same way. i am not really convinced that any of us are meant to be monogamous....?

p.s. what's 2 girls and a cup? is that a threesome? does everyone know but me?

ah, foto and janet, very cute!

the peeing in the shower image, not so much. reminds me of when i had just started copyediting for a boating magazine and wasn't sure if watersports was one or two words. I made the unfortunate mistake of googling it.

Regarding how the FDA approves medications...
regarding Pamelabeth's answer to question #9 what freaks you out? --- An important book on the way clinical trials are conducted and how the FDA approves medications, the best book to read is written by John Abramson, MD, "Overdosed America." Weeks before the Vioxx debacle, Abramson's book was published outlining in EVERY HORRIFIC DETAIL the errors committed in bringing the drug to market. While Dr. Abramson will give you a primer on "relative risk" vs. "absolute risk" it wouldn't be a bad idea to catch up on your statistics before reading the book. Absolutely one of the best and perhaps one of the most important books I ever read!!!!!!!! Think Silent Spring!

Pamelabeth --- my son says about the two girls and a cup...
you don't want to know. You're not the only one who didn't know until now and believe me it's not worth knowing. Think of a #1 and a #2 and leave it at that.

1. If you were to have lived before, what do you imagine your life was like?
I think I must have lived a life of luxury, because I sure have expensive tastes now, without the means to indulge them!

2. If you created your own 'In' and 'Out' list, what is in and what is out in your opinion?
In: Critical thinking. Reading. Book smarts. Street smarts. Any kind of smarts. Dressing appropriately. Good manners. Good grammar. Rewarding talent.

Out: Too-tight clothing. The skin-and-bones look. Intense fascination with dubious celebrity. People who cannot express themselves without resorting to profanity. Overblown compensation for mediocre executives. An electorate that has been lulled into a stupor.

3. Have you ever considered getting cosmetic surgery?
Yes. I'm blessed/cursed with "Greek hips," so I could do with a little lipo. On the other hand, I do sometimes get compliments on my rounded booty (thanks, J.Lo!).

4. What do you find absolutely ridiculous?
This whole mortgage mess. I mean, most of these people had no business buying homes in the first place, and there was a lot of fraud and predatory lending and bad decision-making, which irks me because now prices have been run up so high that my husband and I, who now make good money, cannot afford to buy anything that wouldn't require a hellish commute to our jobs. Also: How is it that we haven't managed to impeach Bush and/or Cheney?

5. Do you consider yourself to be an expert in anything?
I'm more of a generalist. I know a little about a lot of things, and that's why I excel at trivia.

6. Have you cried yet in 2008?
Not yet, although my job makes me want to cry most days.

7. Who do you find fascinating?
Hmmm...I have to say that I am fascinated by J.K. Rowling and how she managed to create and sustain such a fully-realized magical world for seven books. Actually, any prolific author who continually writes quality fiction fascinates me, since I am struggling so much with my writing.

8. Have you ever been physically assaulted?
No, thank goodness.

9. What freaks you out?
Physical pain. Also, getting an IV put in.

10. What is your favorite new song?
I'm not really on the cutting edge of music, although I do like that Feist 1-2-3-4 song.

~Bonus Question~
How about starting off the new year with a confession. Have anything you want to share?
I've probably shared too much already! ;-)

1. If you were to have lived before, what do you imagine your life was like?
I think I was Alexander the Great.

2. If you created your own 'In' and 'Out' list, what is in and what is out in your opinion?
In: the colour grey, biker gloves, electro.
Out: ponchos, purse dogs, UGGs, Paris Hilton.

3. Have you ever considered getting cosmetic surgery?
I have, but I highly doubt I'll ever do it. It would just be way too painful.

4. What do you find absolutely ridiculous?
Not leaving a good tip at a restaurant, war, owning a gun.

5. Do you consider yourself to be an expert in anything?
Sure -- fashion.

6. Have you cried yet in 2008?
Nope, and probably won't anytime soon.

7. Who do you find fascinating?
Angelina Jolie and Courtney Love.

8. Have you ever been physically assaulted?
Nope.

9. What freaks you out?
Guns. Drug overdoses.

10. What is your favorite new song?
Making a Scene by Fritz and the Phantoms.
...and Shadowplay by The Killers.

I feel like disappearing to some far-off island, never to be seen again!

Janet, I almost forgot to ask, what DID you do New Years Eve? More importantly, did you stay sober and keep your top on? Any more Sag harbor escapades? Email?

Mad Fingers
Mad Fingers, sorry to hear of your impoverished state. Here's to things looking up for you early in 08. Meanwhile, keep your chin up, girl. Spiff up your resume, using freelancing to account for unemployed periods.

Find whatever work you can to get money flowing in. And if it's ridiculous, start a blog under a pseudonym about it and turn that into a book deal.

1. If you were to have lived before, what do you imagine your life was like? I can't even imagine this. If I could have chosen a time to live before, I don't think I would have wanted to be a woman, as in history we often had it tough. Perhaps as the beloved and pampered wife of a cattle baron?

2. If you created your own 'In' and 'Out' list, what is in and what is out in your opinion?
In: natural fabrics, economy-gas cars, healthy beauty
Out: glamorization of the skin-and-bones look on anyone; people who can't string five coherent words together; Bush and Co; war; poverty; global warming

3. Have you ever considered getting cosmetic surgery? As a young woman, I thought I'd want a facelift or something by 37. A youthful 46, I could only wish for lipo.

4. What do you find absolutely ridiculous? The horrible things phishing spammers say to try to get men to buy "male enhancement" pills.

5. Do you consider yourself to be an expert in anything? Sort of.

6. Have you cried yet in 2008? Yes. My son's engagement announcement, sappy movies -- take your pick.

7. Who do you find fascinating? C.S. Lewis. J.K. Rowling. Martin Luther King.

8. Have you ever been physically assaulted? Yes.

9. What freaks you out? Heights, apparently. I gave up roller coasters and other queasy-makers after I had kids, but it has gotten worse. At a recent concert, I inadvertently bought tickets online for front row of a steep balcony, and I couldn't sit there for waves of nausea, so I retreated 15 rows. Gak!

10. What is your favorite new song? Edmundo de Ros and His Orchestra's The Wedding Samba from the soundtrack of A Good Year. Lilly, and The Gardens of Sampson and Beasley or anything else by Pink Martini.

~Bonus Question~
How about starting off the new year with a confession. Have anything you want to share? Oh, I think I've done enough damage over the many posts! Well, maybe just one. I can organize material for a paragraph, article or book brilliantly but I can't hang pictures and my house is getting chaotic lately -- time to buckle down.

thanks for the encouragement.

My spouse freaked over me working at an adult store, more for safety than content concerns, so I probably won't take the job.

Too bad I don't live close to you. I'm actually very good (not expert, but close) at hanging paintings. Guess that's because my mom's an artist and we have her work everywhere.

Mad, I think it would be a delicious expose if you could write about it later.

Maybe this time you could go out on a (safe) limb and take something you could write about later to the amusement of readers everywhere. You do have a great sense of irony ...

My New Year's Eve was exceedingly lame. I watched several episodes of Intervention followed by Paranormal State clutching a big bag of cheese doodles and a bottle of Snapple.

I'm happy to report that I stayed fully clothed the entire evening.

Bleak kept coming over and knocking at my door, but I kept shooing him away as I was waiting for you.

Happy New Year!
1. If you were to have lived before, what do you imagine your life was like? Like a Rock Super Star's life, namely Hendrix or Joplin.

2. If you created your own 'In' and 'Out' list, what is in and what is out in your opinion? Um, Uggs are still out (though ultra comfortable and nearly necessary in the snow.) Unfortunately, celebrity mania will continue to be in and dominate 2008, leaving this years election in its paparazzi-crazed wake.

3. Have you ever considered getting cosmetic surgery? Sure, a scar on my chin covered, lipo and a lift for the girls.

4. What do you find absolutely ridiculous?
Healthcare in America.

5. Do you consider yourself to be an expert in anything?
Yes, shopping at thrift stores and shopping for men's clothing.

6. Have you cried yet in 2008? Not yet. Hopefully I will later tonight at the movies!

7. Who do you find fascinating?
Joan Didion.

8. Have you ever been physically assaulted?
I have been in a few scuffles but never randomly assaulted.

9. What freaks you out?
Marriage and the concept of forever.

10. What is your favorite new song?
The one I have in my head is Play it Again by Taylor Swift, though it is not my fav ... just stuck.

~Bonus Question~
How about starting off the new year with a confession. Have anything you want to share? Um, well, I really want to have a child, but I would never consider it until I am sure on the man and the money is flowing a wee bit easier. I cannot believe I said that out loud.

wait a sec. your son just got engaged, and you're...46?! i'm less that 10 years younger and i'm only considering getting pregnant (or, at least, doing something to become a mom) for the first time. shoosh. sometimes i really do worry that it's later than i think. that said, you must have been a young mom; and your son will be a young husband.

btw, i want to say i am very grateful to you guys today. the whole cat thing (itself plus everything else it's bringing up for me) is making me weep. it was really an unfortunate day for me to be scheduled to work at home, alone; but who knew. i haven't felt the energy to pick up the phone and talk to my friends about this, or to do much of anything really; but knowing you are "there" is a big help. seriously.

Janet!!!!

That WAS me banging on your door New Years Eve! I had already taken my pants off on your porch so you could see my very stained inside out briefs. I think your neighbors saw me. Thankfully they didn't call the police. I was looking forward to a fun evening of "watersports" and shower gymnastics. I even brought my video camera. But I guess you didn't know it was me. After about 20 minutes I gave up, relieved myself in your bushes and drove back to New Jersey. I hope you had fun with your bottle of snapple. Let me know if you're going to be in manhattan anytime soon.

I wonder if you'd have opened the door if I'd done the male enhancement thing.

Pam, I graduated high school at 16 and married three years later, and got pregnant within a matter of months! What can I say, I was young and dumb -- some guardian angel was wringing his hands over me but did his best, I'm thinking.

My son graduated from college five years ago, and is almost done with his masters at a major university, bless his heart, and he's been in his field fulltime for five years -- two years in management -- and an intern before that. His fiancee is 28, well-settled in her career and almost done with her masters. They're young -- but not as young and unformed as we were! Compared to us, they're elders and sages.

It's such a toss-up. You have children when you're young, you have energy and youth to deal with them and seldom a problem getting preggers. But you must have plenty good intentions and determination make up for what you lack in experience, wisdom and MONEY.

Have children later and you benefit from added experience, self-discipline, big-picture wisdom and earning power, and probably with your education out of the way.

My husband and I have observed that we could have used the resources we have now back when our children were small. We had a P.S. baby who's in his teens, and he seems incredibly spoiled to his older brothers, who remember Waltons-like living in days of material scarcity.

I have a couple friends who had a baby in their mid-to-late 40s and I've got to say they've fabulous moms sans the insecurity I had in my youth -- they really have their parenting ducks in a row.
