I have the email for Modern Love submissions, but does anyone have Danie Jones's email? I tried djones@nytimes.com, but it bounced back. Thanks!

Also, for those who have been published in the column: How long before you heard back after you sent in your essay?

When I heard Daniel Jones speak, he indicated
that he wants everyone to use the generic ML
email. He is not a staffer at The Times.

I have modernlove at nytimes dot com

Have tried it several times, yet it ALWAYS bounces back. Is that the wrong email address?

That's the address I used. You should get an automatic reply back. I've submitted twice. The first time I received an automatic reply, followed by a kind rejection a few weeks later. The second time I didn't receive anything. After waiting several weeks, I resubmitted, with a note apologizing if it was a double submission but explaining I had never received the automatic reply I thought I was supposed to get back. Daniel Jones responded and said they were having problems with that e-mail address and that he never received my first submission. (This was last spring.) So if you don't receive an automatic reply back, I'd resubmit. Good luck!

Hmm...this is odd. I do get an automatic reply-- but it says "technical details of permanent failure."

Very odd....

Oh, something must be messed up then. This is the automatic reply I got:

Thank you for writing to Modern Love at The New York Times.

If you are sending a letter in response to a column, thank you
for your feedback. Correspondence sent to this address for the
writer of a particular column will be forwarded if appropriate.

If you are submitting an essay for consideration, please allow
3-4 weeks for a response. If you don't hear from us within a
month, you should assume we won't be using your essay.

If you are seeking guidelines for submitting an essay to Modern
Love, they appear below:

The editors of Modern Love are interested in receiving deeply
personal essays about contemporary relationships, marriage,
dating, parenthood...any subject that might reasonably fit under
the heading "Modern Love." Ideally, essays should spring from
some central dilemma the writer has faced in his or her life. It
helps if the situation has a contemporary edge, though this is
not essential. Most important is that the writing be emotionally
honest and the story be freshly and compellingly told.

The best way to see the range of styles and subjects we'd like to
publish is to read the column:

columns/modernlove/index.html

A book of collected columns titled "Modern Love: 50 True and
Extraordinary Tales of Desire, Deceit and Devotion" is also
available at bookstores or at the NYTimes.com Store.

-Send submissions to: modernlove@nytimes.com
-Length: approx. 1500-2000 words
-Please attach your essay as an ms-word compatible doc AND
paste it into the body of the email.
-No pseudonyms (including the author), composite characters or
invented situations may be used.

Same here
I applied, got the form e-mail and then a rejection a few weeks later. I was more than happy to get a rejection -- so many places don't even bother! Grrr!

I sent my essay via modern love email and Jones liked my essay and wrote back to me in about two months. I don't know if it will help to send it right to him since it seems like the good ones make their way to him anyway. But if you want his email, email me off the BB and I will share it with you. Good luck.

hear him speak on Feb 27 in NYC
One more time, Jones does not want the pieces sent directly
to him. When he spoke, he indicated that method screws up his ML filing system. I also had his personal email and he
told me that as well. So use the generic ML addy. He is speaking again in NYC on a panel Feb 27.
