I am struggling with how to write a cover letter and what to include in the letter. I feel I am qualified for a lot of positions but have a hard time getting that down on paper. Has anyone had any luck with a particular type of cover letter? A very formal one? A short one? A more personal one? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Im trying to break into an entry-level publishing job. Thanks!!

Be specific
1. Make sure letter goes to a real person
2. Two short paragraphs are all you need
3. First should outline what you're looking for (be as specific as possible) and why their company speaks to you.
4. Include information about their company...(ie: I recently read of your expansion into historical fiction titles and feel my skills and background in this genre would suit your company well) or something of that nature. Second P should offer a bit about your background but not repeating your resume.
5. If you're a recent grad, focus on the work you've done at school as well as your passion for the types of projects the company pursues.
6. Ask for an informational interview...a few minutes of editors time to explore any opportunities and then follow up with a call.
7. Be persistent. If there's a certain company you're looking to work for and they don't call you, continue to reach out to them every few weeks. Editors are extremely busy and many won't even look twice at your letter but every now and then a little persistence will get you in the door.
