For those of you who freelance:
If you have a project that requires you to utilize the services of a graphic artist, how do you determine what your fee will be (as project manager) for the client? What things do you factor into the overall rate (other than the graphic artist's rate and time to edit)? Client would need a quick turnaround for a 10-page full-color program.

It would depend on your input in the project. Are you just overseeing the schedule/passing along information or are you acting as the defacto art director and making design suggestions? You would charge a higher fee when acting as the art director.

Also, if you are going to be responsible for paying the graphic artist as opposed to them billing your client directly, you are taking on a risk that your client may not pay/pay late. Greater risks, and possibly having to front the graphics artist their fee until you get paid, increase the percentage, too.

I would be providing some input as to what the final project should look like, along with writing content and editing. What I am struggling with is wanting to be fair while also ensuring that I profit as well since I found the project. So, hypothetically speaking, if the artist will require 40 hours to complete the work (at an hourly rate), is it fair practice to keep 15% or more of the fee?

To answer your question, payment will be made to me and I will then pay the designer.

I'd find out what the art director/designer's fee is first and then mark it up 15-20% to the client. This is customary.

Based on the fact that you will 1) be giving your own design suggestion (acting as art director) and 2) paying the graphic artist directly, whether you have been paid or not not by your client, I would say a 20-25% percent of their fee would be an acceptable up charge to add.
