is it important to own this? or can all that information be found off websites these days?

Also, is writersmarket.com worth joining?

It certainly doesn't hurt. If you're starting out it's especially good. I found that even more important than the market listings were the articles in the front helping with things like query letters and the business side of writing. My copies of the WM (several now) led to many many rejection letters, all of which I learned from. If you have $30 or whatever it is now to spend, I say get it.

I don't think it matters
If you're going through to find markets to sell your stuff, then no. You should already have an idea where to send things, such as reading the publication and taking a look at the masthead.

Otherwise, you may not need to know the addresses for Knitting World or Physical Therapy Today.

I guess what I'm saying is that you should never use it as a crutch. You should be finding and making your own contacts.

writersmarket.com in my opinion isn't worth joining. The book is ok, but I'd buy it for the articles, not for the contact info, because by the time the book comes out each year, the info is often outdated.

You can get all of this info online these days, and it's much more current as the web is updated far more often. Are you writing fiction or looking to freelance or write a non-fiction book? For fiction, I'd suggest publishersmarketplace.com and agentquery.com as well as just googling to see what turns up....

So, so true! You wonder how outdated? I was still listed in it four years after leaving the job.

thanks.

i was wondering if i should get it for the contacts - not for the ideas of who to contact. i wondered if it had better info than i could find on the actual websites of different publications. but it sounds like the book can be pretty outdated. thanks for the thoughts.

I still think the best way to get info on current contacts is
to go to a big magazine store and browse a current issue.

Not worth joining
Writers Digest collects the info. for each edition up to a year in advance (I know because we get their emails). Thus, a chunk of the information is obsolete before the book hits the stores.

If you're looking for current, original, paying market listings (that are free), with each editor's "current needs", see our archives here:
