Hello! I've been browsing through these posts and thought this might be a useful place to get some suggestions. I graduated from a well-known private liberal arts college in Minnesota in May 2007 and did a temporary event planning job in California after I graduated. I'm now back in MN until I can get some work, but would really love to relocate to southern California. I realized that I wanted to break into the public relations field, with my ultimate goal being to work with a public relations agency, but I'm not sure of how to best do that. My only internship was as a content writer with a real-estate advertising company, but it ended up being a scam. I can still use the internship, but I don't have a reference or anything from it.

Positives:
- I have a solid resume and a very strong reference from my temporary position in CA
- I have the skills for public relations - organizational, interpersonal, multi-tasking, hardworking, conceptual, etc.
- I have experience in other fields, such as hospitality, technology, administrative...

I'm not only looking for a way to break into the field, I'm also looking for ways to network with other professionals and definitely learn as much as I can. Any suggestions?

Hi Cassomatic,
I do PR in Southern California and I'll be happy to email with you, but as most people will tell you, the best way to get a job here is to move here first. That's likely not reasonable for you right now, so I would try to get an internship or entry level job in your area to make sure you like the field, and network with as many people there as you can. Offhand I don't know of any PR firms in Minn, but check with your alumni network, on LinkedIn, and on ODywerpr.com to see what might be in your area. I wouldn't limit yourself to PR firms either. Minn is home to a number of large corporate brands that likely have in-house PR departments.
Good luck!
