I recently took an editing test for this position that was advertised online; I nearly made it to the next round of the application process, but my typing skills weren't fast enough (oh, well. I'll just have to practice). Anyways, I later heard through two contacts there that the company is in a hiring freeze due to the Writers' Strike and that no new people are being taken on.

Anyways, so today I wrote and sent a thank-you note to the guy who administered the test. However, I think I may have been a little bit snarky in the note, as in, I mentioned that I'd heard that there was a hiring freeze, in a snarky tone. Help! Now I sound like a bitter reject! (ok, I am a reject, but not a bitter one!) How do I bounce back from this? Or do I just leave it be? How colossal of a mistake was being snarky in that note?

What exactly did you say? It may not be as bad as you think.

If it is actually that bad, though, then I would leave it alone and not draw any attention to it. What's done is done, you know? Maybe just follow up with in a few months reiterating your interest in the position. I am sure foodlit will have some good advice for this.

I don't think there is anything you can do except learn from your mistake and not repeat it. I tend to agree with your own assessment, which is that you sound somewhat like a bitter reject.

Just realize what you have done
I have written things I later wish I hadn't. As you get older/wiser you realize that it's better not to do these self-defeating behaviors.

I mean, yeah, you got rid of some tension but you probably could have done that by taking a walk, writing about the experience for a future project or even primal screaming. It's better to release tension in a way that doesn't leave a permanent reminder.

Anyway, next time be gracious. Putting out positivity I think greatly enhances the chances you will get it back.
