Hi, my name is Matt Hammer. I am currently studying meteorology and journalism at Stony Brook University with the hopes of going into broadcast meteorology. I have recently created my own website, www.MattHammerWeather.com . Just looking for feedback on my site so far. Thanks!

Your website
Matt,

Ok, here goes. What I have to say is meant to be constructive.

I'm a little confused. Your sub heading says: "Long Island related", yet when I clicked on archives' top stories, the articles were not about LI. You probably want to consider focusing your efforts. If you mean LI related then the content should be about LI. That having been said, you might have a link for national stories, Around the Nation. Or Global, etc.

Your subhead is too long. If you were to shorten it to just "Long Island Weather Related Information". Saying "....Weather and Weather related...." is too much, redundant. Don't think you need "....at its finest". You could say something like "Accurate Long Island Weather Related Information".

Since your focus seems to be local information, visitors to your site will probably expect some commentary on the live current conditions feed. At least daily. I feel this way because on the current conditions page there are two links ... one for weather.com and the other for weatherbonk.com. This may be necessary for you to have this feed on your page but without the commentary, visitors will click on those links and be taken to those sites. POOF! They have now left your site. Statistics will tell you that it will be difficult to get them back.

Your banner could use a professional design touch.

All this having been said, I commend you for your initial efforts! I think with some tweaking and focus, you are on your way to an interesting site.

How about adding a surf report?

Feel free to disagree, anyone...

I'd say ditch the counter on the bottom-most professional sites have done away with it and just use the visitor statistics that they get from behind the scenes. Maybe rethink the 'last updated' part, too-the dates on the weekly and current weather should be enough to reassure a visitor that you're updating.

I agree with the previous comment that there are some tweaks with the banner that would help you out. I also agree about linking to other sites-at least make the outside links pop into a new window so that your site is still on their screen underneath.

Are you the only one working on the website? It looks like you're trying to promote yourself with your site. If so, I'd give myself the credit and say 'About Me' instead of 'About Us' for that section.

Overall, not too bad, I think.

I think the articles you've written should be more prominently showcased. That really is the main thing you are selling with your site -- no one is going to come to your site to find out the weather since that's generic info they can get lots of places.

Hey all
Hi, I just got the chance to read your comments and I think they are all fantastic. It's hard updating the site during school semesters, yes I maintain this myself. Prior to reading about adding commentary, I have just added two new features to the homepage. Let me know what you think. Also, I will take into consideration and probably implement many of the suggestions given. Also, if someone knows of anyone that could help me with a better looking banner that would be great. Thing is I'm not sure if I would be able to do that though because the builder I use has template banners and I'm not sure if you can create your own. I'm using Microsoft's office live. Thanks and as always, keep the suggestions coming!

Take Care,

Matt Hammer
