I have a strong print creative direction background and wish to migrate into TV producer. I'm interested in producing some of those home improvement shows on HGTV or the foodie shows on Food Network. Can anyone give me a clue how I might do that? Do I have to "know people"? There's a large production company here in Denver that does a bunch of their shows and I emailed them about some possibilities but of course haven't heard back. I'm willing to start at the bottom as a "gofer". Any inside info would be awesome. Thanks!

You're correct to assume that you need to work at a production company that makes the shows--networks need development execs., not staff producers.

So, stress your design skills, prop hunting, organization, etc, on your resume.

Take a look at realitystaff.com or mandy.com or entertainmentcareers.net to get an idea as to the skills that employers want--shooting DV camera is usually one that is useful. If you don't know how, learn.
