Some one who agreed to write a recommendation letter for J-School refuses to upload his letter. Every day he says he is going to do it today or tomorrow. It has been over a week now. I have a feeling he has not even started writing it. I recognize that this person is doing me a favor but still ... I dont want to hurt my relationship with this person by transforming into some sort of harpy, but thats really how I am starting to feel. It is only Tuesday and we have already exchanged 4 emails about this. There is no way he isnt clear about the importance of all this. I cant even lie about when the deadlines are because it would be too easy to find out the truth. Im just really frustrated and wanting to vent.

Thanks.

Giving someone a week for a recommendation is not a lot of time at all (maybe I misread this). I'd lay off for a while, and when you're almost at the dealine, get in touch with him. Maybe go ahead and get another rec. from someone else, and if this guy comes through, you'll have an extra rec., and if he doesn't, you've still met the rec. requirements.

Like most people, he'll do it when it's due. This is important to you, but not really to him. And if you've only giiven him a week, again, maybe I misunderstood, lay off him. And line up someone else just in case.

Yeah, It has been several weeks since he initially agreed, more over he has a letter he wrote for me before, so its not like he needs to reinvent the wheel. I mean its been a week since he started saying that he will do it *today or tomorrow.*

I have no idea who else I could ask at this late date. The deadline is now.

When you say "now," when exactly? If it's this week, just leave him a voice mail, but you have to stay cool and polite. Just point out that the deadline is Friday, and that you realize he's busy, but that without the recommendation, it will kill your chances. And that the school makes no exceptions. He'll definitely do it, but not without you tearing out your hair. This is the story with recommendations. When the deadline is actually a day away, he'll do it.

Or you could just not go to journalism school, which is always the wiser choice...

Is there anyone else you could ask? The advisor for your school paper? Your English teacher? You can't force anyone to meet a deadline. The best thing to do is have several people write a recommendation letter so that you are never in the position of letting one person mess you up.

You can always offer to write it yourself, send it to him and have him review, make some changes and send. I had several people before actually prefer that so they don't have to start the process themselves.
