I was just looking at mediabistro's salary survey and according to that if you're making 80k a year in the northeast then 75 to 80 percent of media working stiffs make less than you. After taxes 80k brings in about 4k a month, which means you can afford to live in Manhattan if you pay 3/4 of your salary for rent. And you can never buy unless you marry someone who's making more than you.

I don't have a question or a point really. Just felt like typing.

Don't think it really matters. If someone really cares about money, I doubt they go into media. Personally, I think people who makes tons of money, and people who make very little money, and I've never seen any particular correlation between satisfaction, enjoyment of life, etc., and cash. But certainly if making lots of money is a big deal to you, go ahead -- tons of opportunities to do that in the USA.

I'm guessing that you don't live in NYC...I do and have for
years. 80K is a very livable wage; not everyone needs a 3K a month apartment.

I'm an oil man. I'm a family man, I run a family business. This is my son and partner, HW.

You nailed it.
"And you can never buy unless you marry someone who's making more than you."

This is precisely why media jobs are quickly becoming "wife jobs".

Yup, there's a girl in my office who plans to marry rich so she can keep writing. I'm pretty sure that's not going to work out, but at least she's honest with herself.

I think the biggest problem with sub-standard pay in media is that it can make it much harder to have a diverse workplace (diversity in socio-economic background specifically), since many talented and ambitious folks who do rely solely on their job income to support themselves and their families might be drawn to other, more lucrative fields. It's not that the people who do have rich spouses/families are untalented; it's just a much narrower pool.

Anyone who gets into media is nuts because the low salaries really are not worth it. I should have been an oil man. A family man, running a family business. With my son and partner, HW.
