| Designer from oz | Posted 1/17/2008 6:43:40 PM | show profile Hi, I'm a graphic designer from Australia, with hopes of getting a job at a NY Magazine company. I have a degree in Graphic Design, 2 years experience in the industry, and a LOT of drive. Does anyone have similar experiences, or know someone who does, I know that you have to have a job before being granted a work visa, and company would have to really like you to take that risk... any advice? and I would obviously be willing to travel for interviews if that was required... |
| Hanschak | Posted 1/29/2008 10:22:08 PM | show profile I don't want to discourage you, but that may be a tough one... I have been in editorial design for a long time and I have never seen more competition for the few remaining jobs that are out there with magazines. It may be in your favor that what is available now is more often junior and entry-level positions, but the pay has gone down across the board and those positions are unlikely to add anything to the bottom line of hiring you. Maybe if there is some pub out there that would be interested in having your Aussie perspective? Can you set up here in NY for a month or so and just answer everything you can and visit as many contacts as possible during that time? I definately would not recommend flying here for one interview at a time. |
| Designer from oz | Posted 2/1/2008 7:34:38 AM | show profile Thanks Thanks for your advice. I appreciate another perspective, but to be honest I thought your answer was completely patronizing. Maybe it appeared as though I was implying I wanted a job before leaving Australia, I know this is unlikely. But suggesting a pub "might like my aussie perspective" I find that advice at best weird, at worst quite offensive. If I was to live in New York City, I would NOT pull beer to get by, after investing years in study and professional development. I would sooner just travel for fun. With savings from my work in Australia. I am a bit disappointed about this post, considering I expected to receive genuine advice from like minded people. |
| Designer from oz | Posted 2/1/2008 7:40:49 AM | show profile that was an aussie joke... I am obviously aware that you were referring to a "Publisher", not a "Pub". I just read back over my post and the tone doesn't really come through... Thanks sincerely for your good advice, and just to clarify, from Australia, you can get temp "visitor" visas to come over for a short period (three months), but to get a "real job" with more permanency, you have to have been offered a job, the employer "sponsors" you, and you have to go back to your home country and reply for the actual "work visa". hope that is a bit more clear and as you can now see it is not the most ideal of situations! Your advice re: moving to NYC and trying to get anything, is as good direction as any to take, Cheers!! |
| Printingman | Posted 2/1/2008 1:49:20 PM | show profile | email poster He's referring to PUB as PUBLICATION not PUBLISHER or DRINKING ESTABLISHMENT. This has to be one of the strangest exchanges I've seen on these boards. |
| s_sanaru | Posted 2/1/2008 3:01:33 PM | show profile Wow--what a short fuse! That guy is giving you sound advice on every point. The competition for jobs is crazy and if you are not from the US you are really well served to know that in advance. Your personal perspective IS something that could give you an advantage. A lot of DRIVE? Sounds like a lot of EGO for someone with 2 years experience |
| paludi | Posted 2/1/2008 4:54:26 PM | show profile Dude, I once lost out on a swank design job at a music magazine to a guy with far less experience who was also a musician (which I could not say). Personal experience, perspective, whatever, is huge! |
| cabaraba | Posted 2/1/2008 7:36:03 PM | show profile If you want to live and work in NYC, move there. THEN look for jobs. Looking for jobs when you live out-of-state or country just doesn't make sense, especially with only a few years experience. I am just like you because I looked for mag jobs out there when I lived out-of-state. Invested $$ on ticket fares for interviews, etc. It paid off because I got some potentials leads and an offer! BUT I didn't live there...yet. and they want to fill positions yesterday and will not pay to move you or fly you! To top it off, the pay for entry-level is not glamourous. Just take the plundge and move to NYC :) |
