Topic: how long to wait?

| inkspot | Posted 1/18/2008 12:36:18 PM | show profile | email poster How long should I wait before hearing back from my first choice magazine before I submit the piece to other venues? The mag I submitted to is a NY weekly and doesn't acknowledge or return unsolicited submissions. So when I should assume that they are accepting my piece? If this is addressed elsewhere on the site, I would appreciate being directed to that place. Thanks for your help. |

| dribbledrive1 | Posted 1/18/2008 12:45:45 PM | show profile Weeklys tend to move pretty fast. If you don't hear back from them in a week or two, I'd send it out to the next one on the list. When I send an unsolicited submission like an essay, I usually send it to my top 5 or 10 pubs simultaneously and then forget about it for a while. |
| inkspot | Posted 1/18/2008 12:53:01 PM | show profile | email poster What do you do if more than one pub accepts it simultaneously? Is there a standard polite way to say, sorry, someone else is publishing it? thanks drib |
| joyeuxnoelle | Posted 1/19/2008 5:05:41 AM | show profile Ive never been lucky or not to have this happen, but I imagine you would just send a polite response explaining that when you did not hear from them, you assumed they were not interested and another pub is publishing it, though you hope to work with them in the future. |
| Village Gal | Posted 1/19/2008 9:36:01 AM | show profile Is this an essay? otherwise, it is best to query first, rather than send an unsolicted submission. |
| inkspot | Posted 1/20/2008 12:30:24 PM | show profile | email poster thanks, one more issue Thanks, everyone. I waited a week, then submitted it elsewhere. But here's another version of that question: There are two different sections of the NY Times that I think would be appropriate for the piece (non-fiction essay). One is in the daily paper, one in the Sunday Magazine. I know they have different editorial staffs, but the submission address for both columns are in the "@nytimes" domain. Can I submit simultaneously to two sections at the Times (there may be some automated computer intake screening system that fields and crosschecks submissions) or should is that not done? I appreciate your help. |
| joyeuxnoelle | Posted 1/20/2008 6:10:04 PM | show profile I seriously doubt any pub is that technologically advanced. |
| dribbledrive1 | Posted 1/20/2008 11:37:52 PM | show profile I've had this happen. I just told them, "Unfortunately, someone has already bought the piece." It was no big deal. -- Posted ? 1/18/2008 12:53:01 PM | show profile | email poster What do you do if more than one pub accepts it simultaneously?
