I'm currently using Elance and Guru and they are (in my opinion) good ways to get paying work. Just be cautious because not only do these sites charge a fee for you to use them, but they also take a percentage of what you earn on each project. All that being said, they are a good way to build up some clientele, get some references, and some money.

Good Lucke!

Legit is a pretty relative term. No offense, but those sites are a way for small organizations to exploit new and inexperienced writers. Writing is already a low paying profession without the help of an auction system that takes a cut. There are far better ways to get clips and experience than to be the lowest bid. If your interest is mainly for the money, work part-time at Starbucks. You'll make more and get better clips by just pitching legit weeklies, dallies, etc.

sites that yield assignments for writers
Letterbox is right, in my opinion. Job boards you access through professional associations are useful; Jennie Phipps over at Freelance Success (you pay a fee) does a great newsletter that can bring you relationships. Just be careful where you spend your bucks unless money doesn't matter. I can vouch for organizations like American Society of Journalists and Authors and Online News Association. I've got assignments through media bistro, by way of my marketplace listing. And I've sealed agreements through Freelance Success newsletter leads. Those worked for me. That's really about all anybody can tell you--what works for her or him and yeah I know I inverted those pronouns. On purpose for fun.
