Looking for a website that hosts writing portfolios for free. Any ideas? Thank you

I'd just use a blogging platform.
Blogger or WordPress are both good choices for this. Easy to set up and free. You can even host them on your own domain name so it's a bit more professional.

pdfs on blogs
But can you post pdfs on blogs if you don't have links to your clips?

It depends.
If you're hosting your blog on your own server, then yes, you can upload PDFs to your server and link to them via the blog.

If you're hosting it at, say, blogspot.yourname.com (which I wouldn't recommend for a professional portfolio anyway), you may need to find a workaround. I don't know offhand if PDFs are supported (I know graphics are).

Hosting PDFs on blogs
I suppose you could upload your pdfs to a website like Box.net and then post the link on your blog.

blogging is working fairly well for me, but I have links to a lot of my work from the publications' online sites.

I do have some pdf stories I'd like to put on. I'll try a workaround and let you know.

Here's an idea that's not as pretty but gets the text down ... copy the text from the PDF doc, paste it into Word, clean it up and then paste it into the blog.

It's cheap and dirty, but might do.

Otherwise, the trick is turning the PDF into a JPG and i haven't figured out how to do that or if it can be done ... JPG files can be imported into the blog.

Sigh.

Turning PDF into a jpeg
If you have Adobe Acrobat, you can save the pdf as a jpeg.
But you should be able to save the pdf., upload it to a web server and link to it from your home page.
