Topic: Switch from Editor to Managing Editor (books)

My publishing career began with the Rotational Associate Program at a major publishing house. While in the program, I rotated through various departments and at the end of the year, I was basically offered two positions in two different tracks: editorial and managing editorial. I chose editorial. Since that time, I have been a children's book editor for three years. Additionally, I have continued to freelance as a keyboarder and copyeditor for that publishing house and also for a well-respected packager. After thinking about my experience, I believe that I would prefer to switch departments and become a Managing Editor instead. I have been told that this switch is MUCH easier than the other way would be (from Managing Editor to Editor), is that true? Is there anyone out there who has made the leap? Or even who made the leap from Editor to another position in publishing entirely? HR? Subrights? Sales? Marketing? I would love to hear what you have to say and I would love any advice that you might have. Thanks! |
