| foto | Posted 1/23/2008 12:09:34 AM | show profile What a slow week here in Off Topic. Isn't there any nosepicking in North Dakota going on? Or any wild colonics parties happening? Even the spammers are quiet this week. Maybe everyone's hanging out over in TV News these days, drinking beer and watching the fights. Has anyone had any interesting adventures so far this week? OK, wake me up when its Thursday. |
| sue ellen mischke | Posted 1/23/2008 12:18:56 AM | show profile I am going to the ob/gyn tomorrow... Is that exciting enough? |
| writesonwater | Posted 1/23/2008 12:21:51 AM | show profile Well, I'm having a major guilt attack. I got carried away on eBay and bought three things when I meant to buy just one. eBay is evil. |
| keltoi | Posted 1/23/2008 12:30:45 AM | show profile Nah; I've been helping our finances for years by selling on Ebay. We love Ebay. |
| sue ellen mischke | Posted 1/23/2008 1:04:17 AM | show profile I am selling a Gucci bag on eBay. I only used it twice...and am asking $400...I paid $900 for it at Neiman Marcus... |
| writesonwater | Posted 1/23/2008 1:05:03 AM | show profile So that was YOU that sold me them three things! I have to figure out how to sell them and some other stuff. Any hot tips for me? |
| writesonwater | Posted 1/23/2008 1:06:18 AM | show profile NO! $900 for a BAG? Aaaagh. Okay, my little lapses in judgment seem really little (monetarily, I mean.) Donna, I hope you got $500 worth of fun out of it ... |
| sue ellen mischke | Posted 1/23/2008 1:09:06 AM | show profile Nope...the Gucci was a waste, but I learned my lesson. The Donna Chang is no longer materialistic as of last week. She is selling all her useless expensive stuff. Also selling a couture Donna Buchman jacket, Prada bag, two Kate Spades and one Fendi. |
| writesonwater | Posted 1/23/2008 1:27:43 AM | show profile That's it. I'm forsaking materialism too. I can DO this. This week. I'll do it this week. And procrastination. I'm giving it up too. It's not too late for a New Year's resolution, is it? I have a truckload of stuff I'm taking to the local charity. |
| writesonwater | Posted 1/23/2008 1:28:18 AM | show profile And sweets. I'm giving up sweets. |
| writesonwater | Posted 1/23/2008 1:29:03 AM | show profile C'mon everybody! Repeat after me: I'm mad as hell and I'm not gonna take it anymore! |
| writesonwater | Posted 1/23/2008 1:30:11 AM | show profile Kate Spades? Which ones and how much? |
| keltoi | Posted 1/23/2008 1:32:00 AM | show profile Donna Chang, start with: I will never pay obscene amounts of money just because something has someone else's name attached to it. |
| writesonwater | Posted 1/23/2008 1:35:54 AM | show profile Wait, keltoi -- that's really good -- let me write that down! When I was in my teens, the craze of having Sergio Valente's signature on your jeans pocket was in bloom. I had a cool signature (still do) and I had a friend that embroidered well so I paid her to embroider MY signature on a pair of cords and a pair of painter pants. Talk about missing the point -- or maybe that was it? |
| keltoi2 | Posted 1/23/2008 10:54:15 AM | show profile At least it was your OWN name on your pants, wow. I think if I'm going to wear something with someone else's name or initials on it, THEY should be paying ME. And unless you bought a few books or View Master reels lately, that wasn't me you bought from. |
| wineaux | Posted 1/23/2008 12:14:00 PM | show profile I'm with you Keltoi. I get so pissed when I see HUGE logos of brand names on them. Like I want to pay money to have someone else's name on my bag or shirt???? I would feel like a shmuck, being a walking billboard for a company, AND paying rhidiculous amounts of money for the stuff. My life is drudgery this week. Work, work, work. Until Friday, then I'm going snowboarding. Yippeee!!!! Oh, I had one exiting thing happen. I went to see the Blond Redheads on Saturday nite at Terminal 5. The opening band reminded me of OMD. Ah, the memories. It had to have been the nicest concert crowd I have ever seen. I spent too much time in LA, I think. |
| sue ellen mischke | Posted 1/23/2008 12:36:43 PM | show profile Keltoi...I am over it. I don't have urges to do that anymore. My parents, who have over-bought their entire lives, just informed me that they can't afford to live in their house anymore. After that...I'm done. I don't want to end up like them. I haven't bought anything useless in one month and don't plan to. |
| keltoi2 | Posted 1/23/2008 12:58:20 PM | show profile I'm not totally guilt free myself. About 10 years back I was spending far too much on going out in NYC and Ebay and stuff which I should have been spending on crazy things like paying down credit cards. It came back to haunt me big time. I've gotten a lot better, but I'm still paying some of it off. But for the past few years, I've gotten much, much better about living within my means. (Coincidentally, I also got married.) And the bright side about my Ebay splurges of 10 years ago? That's what I've been selling off to help our finances now. |
| wineaux | Posted 1/23/2008 3:35:16 PM | show profile OH, I got bitten by the Ebay bug right after I had my first child and was freelancing from home full time. That was my little "break", canvassing ebay for vintage stuff. I finally realized I had an issue and closed my account. But, after reading DC's post, I'm thinking of getting on there to look for a nice purse. I've been told by friends it's a great way to get a good handbag for much less money. I'm sure for the same reason Donna's selling hers: buyer's remorse. I just went looking for a handbag and can't get over how expensive they are. Even at Banana Republic you can spend upwards of $300. Unless you want a piece of junk that falls apart, that is. So frustrating. |
| sue ellen mischke | Posted 1/23/2008 3:49:01 PM | show profile wineaux...my Gucci didn't sell for the amount I wanted. I am willing to lower it to $375...? |
| Nikongirl | Posted 1/23/2008 3:52:09 PM | show profile eBay I have personally never been on eBay. I have a Joe Lewis (famous boxer) autograph on a Ceasar's Palace napkin from the 70's ..is that something someone would be interested in on eBay? |
| wineaux | Posted 1/23/2008 5:01:29 PM | show profile Still a little pricey for my tight purse strings, although I know that's a really good deal. I might get my ass handed to me by the husband if I did that. |
| wineaux | Posted 1/23/2008 5:07:25 PM | show profile Hey Nikon: Check out http://www.cmgworldwide.com/sports/louis/faq.htm That might give you some sort of idea what you may get for it. Do you live in NYC? I know there are a bunch of really reputable sports memorobilia (sp) dealers. |
| writesonwater | Posted 1/23/2008 5:27:23 PM | show profile On the purse thing, I have a friend who manages a department store (think Steinmart) and he has a customer who comes in periodically to buy bags of bags, literally, especially Guess and other labels like that, on big discount, only to resell on eBay. I know for a fact that some of the "deals" I see on there I could do better in stores. If I shopped. |
| keltoi2 | Posted 1/23/2008 6:20:11 PM | show profile Ebay is hit or miss on how things sell. You could have a few weeks where no one even gives your stuff a look, then the next week two avid collectors bid your item up like crazy. Never can tell. You can put a reserve on an item you're selling if you don't want to risk selling it too cheaply. That said, you can get an idea of what something is worth by watching on Ebay for a month or two to see how similar items are selling. |
