I've written a 4,000 word essay about my travel misadventures in Russia and am having a hard time figuring out where I could pitch it. It could be trimmed a bit, probably, but not down to a newspaper piece, I imagine. And it doesn't seem like the type of story that gets published in Travel magazines, there's not much advice there. I would appreciate thoughts on how to go about selling a piece like that. With much appreciation.

4,000 words is an awkward length. Harpers and a couple of magazines will sometimes publish an essay of that length, but there aren't many markets these days for anything that long. Your best bet would be to cut it to 1000 words and send it as a back of the book piece. Anything above 2000 words will probably be a tough sell.

There aren't many print outlets for travel pieces that are more literary and less service-y. Maybe try the Travel Channel's WorldHum.com. Every year, an essay or two from WorldHum makes it into the Best American Travel Writing. They pay too--though not much.
