Today's centerpiece (at least for the moment) on nytimes.com is "Warnings don't deter lovers of sushi," which is a reaction story to the high mercury warnings on sushi -- actual news that was released yesterday. That story angle is so Gannett "Real Life Real News." I've noticed this trend over the last couple of years, the seeming dumbing down of the Times, but this particular story today totally drove it home. |

True, the Times is no longer entirely dedicated to cold-hard-facts type of reporting (though, that is still very much a part of the publication). But I feel the window-into-life content is a relevant element to the paper. USA Today's writing style is what qualifies it as McNews, as far as I'm concerned. Short, quick and barely on a sixth-grade reading level, they truly dumb down the news into bite-size pieces for the masses. At least at this point, I don't think the Times is close to comparable. |
