| ellen11 | Posted 1/31/2008 6:01:46 PM | show profile Media relations means establishing and maintaining relationships with reporters, editors and producers at media outlets. Media relations is an important component of a publicity (public relations) campaign. It means getting press (media) coverage for your clients. Regularly. It also means knowing who is covering what and where they are. It requires reading, listening and watching. If you're in NYC, the media capital of the world, media relations is very competitive. It is also incredibly rewarding. |
| Cyrus | Posted 1/31/2008 6:24:27 PM | show profile For better or worse, actually doing strategic work in public relations will require you either working your way up within an agency or coming to an agency with substantial journalism experience as an offset. One of the critical skills many miss in the profession is the fact that you need to be an expert in the fields where you work; that means having the ability to clearly and concisely explain what you're pitching to a reporter or editor. If you can't do that, you won't find traction on a pitch. Account executives are usually the first level that interface with media, although that varies by agency. FWIW, I hate the interchanging use of publicity and public relations. The former is generally confined to the entertainment field, where the latter involves strategic planning on how to best position a company and its offerings as part of an overall marketing campaign. IOW, people who work in entertainment have a much different typical day than those who work in many other sectors. ------ Cyrus Afzali Astoria Communications www.astoriacomm.com |
