I'm two years out of college and I've recently decided to try pursuing my passion of food and cooking while I take a detour from law for a little bit. I started a blog about four months ago and that seems to be going well, but I'm going to have to leave my current job by July and I'm so afraid of not finding a job at a food magazine or the Food Network since I have ZERO editorial/magazine/journalism experience (just researching or law related experience). How do I even begin to make up for that? A friend suggested I start randomly sending query letters, resumes, and copies of my blog posts to free community newspapers asking for freelancing jobs and hope that one will accept me on a whim since I'll ask for no pay. To add to my hopelessness, jobs listed are almost always for very high positions like senior editors or writeres with at least 10 years experience or 5 years experience. I just want an entry level job that will be relevant to what I love (restaurants, food, eating, cooking)! Any advice at all?

Yes, don't work for free! Just send queries to your local papers and suggest ideas for stories or even write a spec article. That's what I did and it let to other assignments and then to selling the spec article as well!

Once you have a few clips that are food related, start sending your resume to the food mags as well for any junior level jobs that might open up. Even if you don't see a job listed, you can still send a cover letter and resume in to hr or an editor.

Good luck!

Also, if you can afford it, you may want to take the food writing boot camp here. I took the one taught by Laurie Buckle, who is a managing editor at Bon Appetit, and the class was a lot of work, but I learned a ton, and one of the assignments got me in the door at a local paper and led to a continuiting food writing contributor role with them!
