I just sent an essay to the New York Times Lives column using the generic email address. Now I fear that I've dumped it down a black hole and no editor will ever get to it. Any advice?

If you have a real editor's email address, send it to him too.

I have heard John Glassie speak in person, twice, and I think those panels are available from MB. As I recall, he specifically asked people to use the generic address. Years ago, there was a gatekeeper for Lives but I don't think that's the case any more. I think he reads everything. But it is a very long shot. He gets lots of submissions.

My best friend works over at the Times. She and her editor have both assured me that the "slush pile" is sifted through daily and read by interns and assistants.

However, I, too, would advise you to find the name of the editor whose desk you'd like to see your piece land upon. Addressing your submission to him/her could give you an advantage.

I just gave out the name of the Lives editor and he is
not a staffer at the NYT magazine.
