| Mag Girl | Posted 1/30/2008 5:08:31 PM | show profile I am tired of winter..... gimme some 70-degree days already! My weekly outing to the dog park with my lovable big beast is killing me in this weather. But he's even more of a beast if we don't go. |
| GGG | Posted 1/30/2008 5:25:15 PM | show profile Count me in I'm in! New York is so blustery today that they've issued Wind Advisories, but from my window it looks deceptively lovely and sunny. The most simple tasks (like walking to the subway) on a day like this are just miserable. I'm counting the days when I can trade my boots for flip-flops. ------ Check out the blog! www.girlgoesglobal.com |
| pholiday | Posted 1/30/2008 5:29:39 PM | show profile I am so ready that we are booking tickets to the Caribbean in Feb. This is my first Chicago winter and it is sooooooo cold. I especially hate it cause there are teaser days here and there - we get one 50 degree day in a slew of zeros. However, the weather got the dialog going with my partner about living half the year here and half the year in South America (or another inexpensive beach locale.) We have lived abroad, so we have no worries about other cultures or "making it" somewhere else, etc. We love that aspect. Any feedback on living in two places? Does anyone on this board do it? It only seems fair that if we work freelance we should use that flexibility to be happy ... right? |
| Mag Girl | Posted 1/30/2008 5:56:23 PM | show profile pholiday, that sounds perfect- year-round spring/summer! I wish I could do that. If only my husband's job was portable. |
| wineaux | Posted 1/30/2008 6:03:19 PM | show profile Ughh....I'm working in the city next week and am NOT looking forward to trudging around in the whipping wind. We're going to Puerto Rico in a month and I can't WAIT. Just got a new cute suit, too! The husband called from a business trip in the midwest and he said it was 17 below zero. So, I feel like a toddler bitching about a little wind. |
| Unemployed-gal | Posted 1/30/2008 6:20:22 PM | show profile I agree! I'm so sick of the cold! Unfortunately, I don't get any vacation time until March (when I'm tentatively going out to Arizona). I'm soooo ready for short sleeved tops and skirts... |
| catlondon | Posted 1/30/2008 6:33:56 PM | show profile You know you should research where in Latin America U.S. retirees are living now. Costa Rica used to be really popular because it was safe and inexpensive. Someone I know just retired and moved to Mexico (but I don't remember where). And I know a woman who spends a lot of time in Panama and really likes it and says there is a growing U.S. community (which you may or may not want). Seriously, retirees have been doing this for a long time and I'll bet there's websites and how-tos on the web. |
| catlondon | Posted 1/30/2008 6:35:25 PM | show profile And by "doing this" I mean they do their snowbirding South of the Border without company sponsorship as in a job. |
| Righter | Posted 1/30/2008 6:50:43 PM | show profile I wish I had a winter to complain about! It dipped down to 70 degrees over here and it was a welcome cold front! Oh well! I guess we all long for that which we can't have! :) |
| writesonwater | Posted 1/30/2008 7:15:38 PM | show profile I'm ready to get warm --and I live in Texas, for Pete's sake. It's my loveable, drafty old Arts & Crafts era home that has me longing to just a little bit of sweltering. It should only be a few years before my spouse can retire, and then the idea of a north-and-south life appeals to me. But it would have to be really south (not Dallas) so the winter would be warm. The Rio Grande Valley might do it. I've heard disturbing accounts of Mexico from friends who've gone recently, so I might stick to American soil. Also, I would want it to be quite north so the summers wouldn't be hideous. Nova Scotia? |
| catlondon | Posted 1/30/2008 7:27:18 PM | show profile Prince Edward Island. The gulf stream gives it really warm water, Bermuda-like almost. But the jelly fish can be bad. |
| foto | Posted 1/30/2008 8:07:47 PM | show profile Where is that damn groundhog! He better not lie this year. You realize we are the only country in the industrialized world that uses a rodent to predict weather. When is groundhog day anyway? We are all so yearning for spring that we look into its beady eyes seeking signs of spring. |
| Janetblueyes | Posted 1/30/2008 8:31:28 PM | show profile Maybe I'm weird, but I love the cold and really hate the summer months. I have sort of a reverse Seasonal Something-Or-Other Disorder. Love my fleeces, turtlenecks, warm coffee and blustery winds and really dislike heat, humidity and because I live in the wanker capital of the East Coast--The Hamptons--, the crowds. |
| sue ellen mischke | Posted 1/30/2008 10:21:23 PM | show profile I'm with JBE on this one...love my cold weather. It's below zero in Chicago, and I'm in front of the fire with the kitties. Priceless. |
| keltoi | Posted 1/30/2008 11:18:47 PM | show profile Don't mind the cold so much, but REALLY mind the $3.39 a gallon heating oil, so spring is welcome anytime. |
| wineaux | Posted 1/31/2008 9:39:30 AM | show profile I like the cold too, to a certain extent. Falling snow is sublime. It's just in Feb. where I really get the blues and start longing for warm beaches and blue water. But, the right gear makes all the difference. I didn't have the right gear when I first moved to a colder climate, and it was one miserable winter until I realized splurging on the good stuff like silk long underwear, good, thick wool/cashemere hats and gloves and a full-length lined coat and lined boots were a neccesity. My attitude took a serious shift once I was warm when I was outdoors. |
| Iron Eagle | Posted 1/31/2008 9:52:44 AM | show profile Prince Edward Island is a dream but not this time of year. Just got back from Barbados and plenty time floating about the big sea. Now that's happiness! |
