Hello,

Would someone mind letting me know what a decent copywriting rate is per day or per hour?

Thanks,
Jessica

I try to get $60 an hour, and I am in Orange County, Calif. However, I'm a fast writer, so it's often more lucrative for me to charge a project fee--$500 for a press release or a sales letter, for instance. For a recent long-term on-site project, I got $55 an hour, but I was hired through a temp agency, so they withheld my taxes and SSN contribution.

Do people charge more in NYC? $60 seems high unless you have a ton of experience, or am I wrong?

60 too low
I charge $100 to $125 per hour...that is pretty standard these days in NYC.

I'd loooove to get $125 an hour but, at this point, I'm happy with my $40-$50 per hour copywriting rate. If you can charge more, and they accept, then go for it.

What about editing fees? I have tremendous editing experience, but charge very little---only $35/hour. Am I an idiot? I've had a ft job most of my life, so now that I'm freelancing I'm kind of clueless about how to get (corporate) work. Cold-pitching seems like it's unlikely to turn up anything.

editing rates?
I have this same question -- how much do I charge for editing/rewriting marketing copy? I was asked to give a flat fee for four pieces of editing. For original writing, the company pays 40 cents a word, so my expectations are low for pay; however, it's also not brain surgery. One of the pieces requires a bit of research on my part, so it's a bit like a complete rewrite; the others just need some heavy editing. I figure it won't take me more than 5 hours to complete the work. Advice?

Norcal here. Going rates are anywhere from $40-$50 for lower rung freelancers (newbies, inexperienced, students or those who just want to shoot themselves in the foot), to $125/hr. I'm still trying to break $100 but haven't earned those tripes yet.

Uh, haven't earned those STRIPES yet, that is.

Are you saying newbie editors charge $40-$50/hour? That doesn't seem right. Newbie editor jobs seem to advertise at around $20/hour or so---more than $50/hour seems steep for basic editing, doesn't it?

Or were you talking about copywriting?
