| f807mcmusic | Posted 2/1/2008 4:20:55 PM | show profile | email poster AS short as I can; Began writing 1992: have done much over these years for news and advertising environments, but unsteady work history is hindering me from getting back to something steady and long term. Have had hundreds of stories published in several local publications on Long Island, have had lots of ads too, scripts etc. etc. and still more etc. Need to get back to an environment where I can be who i am anyway. Too many places on Long Island are NOT RIGHT. How can I overcome this problem on my resume, which is filled with many genuine accomplishments as well, fro each employer listed... ANYONE with info/advice Thank you so much in advance. -Note: I have also had to take a number of "survival type jobs in order to try and get whatever money I can manage to come in. Though I don't appear to be surviving very well... |
| writesonwater | Posted 2/1/2008 6:39:20 PM | show profile Might just try going with a bio that lists all the places you've been published and companies you've done work for, as opposed to a resume that lists all your itty bitty jobs. Survival jobs aren't meant for writing resumes, I've had to conclude .. Also, you can get some of your past articles online by joining something like Searchwarp.com or blogger.com ... this will help people find you and google you. I was astonished recently by how easy it was to do this. It takes a few days but it all does get into google and has supplemented the places I am published online very well. Now when someone googles my name plus writer there are more prominent listings. It's a time investment, and doesn't pay immediately, but much easier than organizing a website, although I have my name reserved as a domain name as well. Good luck! |
| Marie | Posted 2/2/2008 1:56:33 AM | show profile Do a functional resume, or a modified functional resume, and there's plenty of books on how to write one. Put a Professional Summary at the top, that highlights your working life, and it works wonders on resumes, especially for older people who might have had quite a range of experience. In an interview when the interviewer inevitably expresses wonder at why you suddenly want a staff job with regular hours and a tyrannical boss, don't talk about how you might be hurting financially and the insecurity of freelancing. You need to come across as someone who's succeeding as an independent, but who is, say, tired of the isolation. You want to be around people. You want to work on a team again. The person across the desk will shake their head understandingly. You can definitely do this--it's all a matter of how you present yourself and your experience. I get yourelf to the Barnes and Noble Career Section, spend a day and go through a ton of books and buy one or two that seem the most helpful. Revamp your resume, your wardrobe, whatever. Get a good haircut. Again, you can do this. |
| writesonwater | Posted 2/2/2008 6:10:25 AM | show profile | email poster Marie's advice is good. Sometimes we can get into a rut or even a funk, and we end up projecting that even when we're prospecting/networking for a job. How we present our situation is as important as how we present ourselves with grooming, clothes, resume, etc. Good luck! ------ http://writingporch.blogspot.com/ http://familyrootsandwings.blogspot.com/ |
| f807mcmusic | Posted 2/2/2008 4:33:44 PM | show profile | email poster To Marie and Writies on Water Thanks to both of you for your suggestions. I am honored each of you found time to do so at 2am (Marie) and 6am (...Water). A point or two each of you has made has already been incorporated, or tried recently. For example-I actually did state to one interviewer I wanted to be around people. I NEEDED TO BE AROUND PEOPLE; though I did not shout this. I think your idea Marie to list the resume as a bio type document may work, but then I have to be careful not to get involved with people like those I can't seem to escape. Thank You Ladies!!!-I feel fairly certain saying... and stay in touch if you think it'll help me; for which I will owe, or if you think there's a good idea I can "steal"... and idea or other useful things... |
