Hi, I have a friend who is opening a fashion boutique, and at my recommendation, she approached her local entertainment magazine about writing a monthly fashion column about latest trends and fashion tips and tricks. The editor is interested, and my friend has asked for my help with writing the column and has offered to pay me. I'm wondering how to handle two issues:

1) Getting credit for my part. I would be essentially writing the column for her, but I think she should have the byline (I don't even live in her town). Could we add my name at the end of the article, i.e. "So-and-so contributed to this column."? Or should I just add the column to my portfolio as a "ghost-written" piece? How are these collaborations usually done?

2) How much should I charge? I'm hesitant to ask her for too much since she's just starting out, and it's hard to tell now how successful she'll be. But I don't want to spend too much time for too little.

Thanks in advance for your help!

You could just do a double byline... By Susie Smith and Jennifer Jones. You could also ask the magazine how they would like to handle it.

As far as getting paid: Is she being paid by the magazine? If so, you could split that fee. If not, it would really depend on how many hours are involved, how long the piece is... how much you have to put into it.

Good luck!
