I don't have insurance, but am looking to get new eyeglasses. I haven't had my eyes checked in a while and should double check. Lens Crafters starts at $80 and goes up to $150, but I'm hoping there is something in Brooklyn or Manhattan that's less.

I would encourage you to see an ophthalmologist (a MD). My mother-in-law saw a optometrist for years and was never checked for glaucoma. it went unchecked for years and now she is nearly blind. the sad thing is that it was completely avoidable.

observer, I think she must have just encountered a bad optometrist. I think it's pretty standard for optometrists to test for glaucoma.

Is there a Costco around?
What about clinics or doctors who work on a sliding scale?

If you're speaking of medical insurance, it only covers a select number of things when it comes to an optometrist or opthamologist. Typical medical insurance doesn't cover exams, glasses, etc. anyway. Some get around that by purchasing vision coverage or by socking money in flexible spending.

I'd ask folks who's a good doctor near you and then see if they'll work with you on terms, as some will. I don't mess around with my eyes and always go see a bona fide doctor that I know will be in the same spot in 6 months.

As others have said, you don't have to go see an opthamologist; an optometrist will run checks for glaucoma and other things and will refer you out if you need that.
