| yoshi | Posted 2/6/2008 1:00:12 PM | show profile I'm applying for an Editor position at a Boston area book publisher, and they ask for a salary req. Anyone know what the salary range is these days? |
| Litgrl29 | Posted 2/6/2008 4:16:12 PM | show profile | email poster Same question I am applying for positions (reporter/editorial assistant) in the NYC area and need a little guidance on salary? I have spent the past five years as a real-estate coordinator and left to pursue publishing. I just completed two of three writing internships where my work was published. According to salary.com, I may be compensated from $38-$65. Where do I fall? |
| WritingEd | Posted 2/6/2008 9:09:45 PM | show profile Sorry, I don't know book publishing salaries. But LitGrl, reporter/ed asst positions do not pay as high as $38K. Your experience in another field won't have bearing on how much you can command in entry-level publishing. Except maybe if you were reporting on real estate, where you could perhaps leverage your existing experience in that field. Also keep in mind that Salary.com data is not based on real surveys of people. Check out mediabistro's salary survey or Ed2010 for that. |
| Cwarner | Posted 2/7/2008 11:00:49 AM | show profile For entry level book publishing, the salary range is 26-32K, generally. I don't know about higher up positions, but you would factor in previous experience, as with any job. Good luck! |
| GrOoVaL!c!OuS | Posted 2/7/2008 12:48:54 PM | show profile Editorial Assistant positions are generally about $30K. That can go up or down a little depending on the size of the house. Editor jobs run $55K-$65K...again depending on the size of the house. Note that these are the rates in NY. Boston could be a little different, though probably not all that much. |
| yoshi | Posted 2/7/2008 1:15:31 PM | show profile Thank you I appreciate all of your responses and have applied for the position! |
| Litgrl29 | Posted 2/7/2008 1:46:46 PM | show profile Thanks Wow, thanks for the help. I was way off. |
| pencilandpaint | Posted 2/15/2008 1:55:31 PM | show profile | email poster How about Assistant Editor or Associate Editors for book publishing? Anyone know salaries for magazines, too (editorial assistant and up...) Thanks! |
| Little Fingers | Posted 2/16/2008 1:57:49 PM | show profile "How about Assistant Editor or Associate Editors for book publishing?" There is barely any difference in most houses between an EA position and an AE position. It's more like a vote of confidence! But there is a jump for Associate Editors...I think typically starting around $38K (at least, it was a few years ago). Seriously, check out the salary surveys done by MediaBistro and Publishers Weekly. I have found the PW one in particular to be quite useful. http://www.publishersweekly.com/article/CA6461981.html There's a link to the actual survey results. You have to register to get them, but I've never gotten a lot of spam from PW. And it puts you on the list to receive the survey questionnaire in the future. |
